Tambacounda Hospital Tambacounda Hospital is an architectural structure which embeds itself within the local community, economy, and landscape of eastern Senegal. The hospital services around 20,000 patients per year servicing patients as far as the neighbouring country of Mali. The curvilinear form of the building improves the motion of circulation and accommodates communal spaces formed by the bends of the S-curve. Passive climate design innovations - like the use of lattice-like brickwork - provide maximum protection from the extreme sun while facilitating air circulation. Mazul Beachfront Villas Mazul is a residential project of fifty beachfront villas on the coast of the community of Santa Elena El Tule, Oaxaca. Each villa is designed so that the interior and exterior spaces feel like one. The design of the villa incorporates naturally ventilated and illuminated spaces.The site was of great inspiration for the project, as economical local materials were used throughout the construction and finishes of the design. Barrenechea House Extension This project is an extension of an existing family residence, which offers a social and playful program, including a swimming pool, barbecue area, a sauna, an office, and a guest suite. The inspiration for this project were the existing trees on the site. The sculptural steel elements mimic and frame the outline of the existing trees, while the upper platform offers views of the adjacent nature reserve. The use of raw clay brick as a building material was inspired by the traditional building material in the Santa Cruz area of Bolivia. Alto Anapati Preschool The Alto Anapati preschool project is located in a Nomatsigenga native community in the central jungle of Peru, and generates access to education for more than 50 children, and community space for 86 families. The proposal of the project took on an ethnographic approach, where the architect surveyed the teaching dynamics in the community. This resulted in a program that revolved around outdoor learning spaces and local customs. The majority of materials used in the design are locally sourced and produced, including wood, clay bricks, and river stones. This project has become the heart and soul of the community, and is an important aspect in preserving the Nomatsigengea knowledge and territory. Central Ayutthaya Facades Architect, Onion, was briefed with designing the facades of a mixed-use project located in the old capital of Thailand. They decided that the facade of the project should somehow symbolise the memory of the former capital, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. The inspiration of their design came from 2 sources. The three-dimensional geometry traditionally applied to the design of chedi - the Thailand equivalent to a Buddhist stupa - and the material found in older parts of Ayutthaya including local bricks, white painted plaster, and gold. Masea Wheat and Corn Bakery Masea Wheat and Corn Bakery, located in the heart of the Historic Centre of the city of Oaxaca, reinterprets the Oaxacan tortillería. This project honours the process and enhances the people who produce the baked goods. The spatial quality reenacts the sensory journey that’s generated through order; from the access to the place that shows you the raw material, the mills that transform it, the hands that create the bread on the tables and the clay comal, the finished product, and finally the sales area. The materiality comes from the concept itself. The floors are made of red brick typical of Oaxacan architecture, and the existing walls were pigmented with earth and ollin from the chef Olga Cabrera's bread ovens creating a black colour that contrasts with the natural pine that refers to wheat and corn. Casas Agricultores Casas Agricultores is located on an agricultural ranch surrounded by crops, tractors, greenhouses, and water reserves. The housing complex contains 4 small houses settled between mesquites and huisache, arranged to form a central garden. The development emulates colonial houses where social activity and engagement happens in the center of the site.
