This is the end of a sequence I discussed in a prior Tumblr post. I am kind of glad that Tumblr maxes out at 10 images per post because these ones deserve a little extra attention.
It's interesting where the sample stops. The cursor is at the file's final words: "Now it's her turn to smile." But it begs the question if she should or would.
Does she care about Hawkins? Absolutely. But her dialogue says she's already subconscious about dealing with Newley in regard to Billy. And she's not stupid. There's also the delicate issue of Garrison command finding out about any of this, possibly including Billy's full background because that might jeopardize Newley's career. Which as I recall was a factor in her not being forthright all this time. Was she waiting to tell him when he was adult age? Don't recall.
Though I have to admit seeing the "what? you mean I had a kid all this time?" trope play out would be interesting. Especially in Vehicle which not only had more characters but not as memorably distinct characters.
In a way, Nina (for us) was that same concept rearing its head in the Lion Voltron version. Which probably wouldn't have happened if we caught the first airing of the Coran's son two parter. I know we didn't see it until 1985 and I have no idea why as I have found strong support for it airing November of 1984. I remember missing episodes a lot early on (school was across town) because of not getting home in time. That's how we persuaded Dad to buy a VCR to begin with.
Anyway, back to this interesting Vehicle Voltron snippet. Newley at least got some sort of story by getting sent to Headquarters for a while. Graham had a personal crisis at one point. I know some of it was limits of the original animation, but poor Hawkins just was. I always wanted to know more about him.
