💘 What are the ways my muse says ‘I love you’ without actually saying it?

when ace loves someone, he shows it through his embraces. he’s horrible with words and doesn’t really know how normal people display affection. so when he kisses someone – it’s a dead giveaway of his feelings. when in love, he’ll never be the first to pull away. sometimes, he even forgets to breathe because he’s so absorbed in the other person. 

he’s the type to send flowers, which seems oddly romantic for ace, but he doesn’t let just anyone see that soft side of him. he makes a point to include handwritten notes, like “i saw these today and thought of you, though they’re nothing in comparison. – can’t wait to see you tonight.”, “these remind me of the dress you wore on our third date. it looked so good on you… but even better on my bedroom floor.”, “always, always thinking of you. xoxo yours”, “happy 1 year, 8 months, 2 weeks and 4 days. i love you more every single day.” ace may struggle to say words like those aloud; he’s more comfortable putting pen to paper.

“ --- you’ve got to be fucking kidding me...” Was all Ace found the strength to say as a certain brazen brunette sashayed her way through a crowded club and directly towards him. He knew it was Vegas. Hell, he’d recognize the back of her head in the middle of Times Square on New Year’s Eve. He couldn’t move, frozen to his seat with each arm around a nearly-naked exotic dancer. Fuck, she got me. She won. His mind raced.

It was always a competition with them. Who could hate the other more? Who could love the other more? Who could prove the other wrong? Who could make their point and win the bet? This time, it was Vegas. She had the upper-hand; she caught Ace off guard and he was vulnerable. As the woman, the love of his life whom he never thought he’d see again, made a beeline to his VIP section, he didn’t have a plan. And that was so unlike Ace Bentley.

Well, tonight couldn’t have ended up in a better way.

It’s taken him forever to convince Vegas to do this. But it’s her birthday, and she was going to spend it all by herself, as far as Mike was concerned --- he just had to do something. That, and this has given him the perfect excuse to enjoy her presence somewhere other than in the club. She’s only accepted under the condition that he pay all of her drinks, something he has pretended to be reluctant about, and now she’s taken one too many. A whole bottle of the most expensive champagne, actually. Somewhere in a corner in the back of his mind, Mike is dedicating this whole night to his daddy, whose money he’s oh-so-willingly spending on Vegas and her birthday night.

She’s a giggling mess, so much it’s contagious --- he can’t help laughing every time she opens her mouth to say something new. It’s bad, because she already thinks herself hilarious --- but humoring her during her drunken, birthday night won’t hurt, he figures. Besides, he tried so hard to get her to relax and he’s gotten exactly what she wants; the least he can do is follow her lead.

Of course, she has to mess with him being a rich boy with a luxurious boat and a fancy watch, but he rolls his eyes through all of it and deals with her wittiness and her terrible, cute laughter. “Well, I have tried it --- just not tonight,” he explains, not that she seems to care much. “I mean, I would if you had---” ...and he gives up again, as she continues to talk without really paying attention to what he’s saying. He’s not going to blame her, but it gains her another roll of his eyes.

And sure, she was sober --- but sober as he may be, Mike isn’t fast enough to react properly to her being all over him in less than two seconds. His eyebrows raised right before Vegas’ lips are on his, and the little giggle that leaves her throat as she realizes how dumbfounded he is resonates in his ears. Not wanting to miss out on this moment, though, he does his best to return the kiss, taking in the bitter taste of champagne mixed with the warmth of her lips and humming in approval. “---tastes sweet enough to me,” he finally utters under his breath, their faces still only a few inches away from one another. Then, his rational side comes up before he can stop himself, and he asks: “Why did you do that?”

There is something about getting older that he’s not particularly fond of but, for some reason, his eyes are gleaming with excitement as he plops down on the already quite familiar couch of the exclusive room. “I truly hope your birthday gift isn’t simply making me walk after this for free. I would expect something more... special, from you.” He’s cheeky, sure, but she already knows his cheeky side and even encourages it sometimes with her neverending sarcastic comments, so he has no problem letting that out. His eyes follow hers as usual, and he just can’t hide the grin on his face as he watches Vegas, inevitably wondering what she meant when she texted him she had a gift ready for him to open.
