For years, Dr. Angelou avoided celebrating her birthday after her friend, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated on her 40th birthday in 1968. Instead, she and her friend, Coretta Scott King, would “meet or talk or send each other flowers.” Long before she was a poet and writer and the icon we revere today, Dr. Angelou was a dancer and singer of folk and calypso songs.
