Variable checkerspot
Just wanted to share some crawlie friends from my hike this past weekend in Big Sur CA. Didn’t get any photos of the Ticks hitchhiking on the blades of grass unfortunately. No worries on identifying if you’re busy <3
Just a bunch of long friends! I love them all but especially the millipede. The first dude looks like a butterfly in Nymphalidae, I thiiiink a variable checkerspot. The polydesmid millipede looks like the yellow-spotted millipede, Harpaphe haydeniana, at least Harpaphe genus. But H. haydeniana is the most common there. And the final long fuzzy friend is a tiger moth caterpillar, but I couldn’t say which species. Fuzzy and black is very common in tiger moth caterpillars. :)
Dead butterfly on the trail in Chantry Flats
@bcauseofreasons submitted: I couldn't get as sharp a photo as I wanted. Is it possible to identify this butterfly in Ventura County, California? If not, no worries! I do know that it's a nice friend, although it spooked when I got too close.
This is definitely more than clear enough for an ID! It’s a variable checkerspot :)
