Eulogio Varela —designer, illustrator, painter, decorator— was undoubtedly one of the major references of Modernism in Spain. He inspired Juan Gris or Pablo Picasso, among others, and he was the driving force in our country of the aesthetic trends that flooded the Europe in the early decades of the twentieth century. An Andalucian master who lived in Europe during the interwar period, with a large number of supporters outside our borders, that is now almost forgotten.
Eulogio Varela (1868, El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz – 1955, Madrid) exemplified the existence of a Spanish Modernism in its most cosmopolitan aspect. His designs would be located in the Arts & Crafts line and even in final experiences, like the ones of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony, in a utopic attempt to combine art, craft and design. He was a versatile artist who not only excelled in painting, but also in illustration, graphic design and furniture, in addition to carrying out an educational and theoretical work that helped enhance his name. In 1898 he began a collaboration with Blanco y Negro magazine and becomes one of its most important artists. The bulk of his production is concentrated in this publication, and not only had he become one of the most meticulous contributors, but also —from the 20’s— the “lay out man of the house”, the author of the magazine until the arrival of the Civil War. The result of this collaboration: the collection Colección ABC guarding 950 drawings with illustrations and also designs of capital letters, ornaments, frames and decorative pieces. This exhibition aims to give value to a great artist, rescue him from oblivion and show his drawings and designs for the first time.

Crier’s War by Nina Varela
Started reading Crier’s War on October 22, 2019. By October 25, 2019 I have read 279 pages. My first thoughts on this book were how complicated the world building was and if I would be able to keep all the parts of the world in order. The more I read the more understanding I was and enjoying all the characters and their problems. At this point in the book a big plot twist has occurred in which Ayla finds someone she was not prepared to meet. I do believe this book is moving slower than I would like, but I believe the next part of the story will have a big impact on the pace of the story.
