At the cafe: a love story
I love to work at cafes. I can observe people doing lots of different things either inside the cafe and outside of it through its windows. There are lots of people who come to cafes so they can study or work like me. There are people who come for the free wi-fi, others come for dates, to meet friends, coworkers… And the most different kind of people come here; hipsters, executives, nerdy students, ordinary people, young ones, old ones. It’s a diverse place and I love it, it inspires me to write, so I get hella productive.
Today I spent most of my time working at a cafe downtown and I was honored to witness a beautiful moment between this lesbian couple. I believe it was their first date. The one who arrived first was wearing a beautiful dark blue tailleur and high heels. At first I thought she’d come to work or something, it was about lunch time. She sat at a small table with two chairs, ordered her coffee and I could see her name written on the cup: Laura. She was obviously anxious, though, and would look at the door every five seconds; she was definitely waiting for someone. For about ten minutes I watched her shake her legs under the table and look at her phone a thousand times, ‘till I finally saw her smile towards the door. A beautiful and tiny girl came in, her hair was pastel pink, her transparent silk white blouse wouldn’t hide her bright and colorful tattoos which covered both her arms. She got in with a huge smile as Laura got up to greet her. Laura was extremely more anxious than the other girl but she was so happy, it was cute to see. They greeted each other with cheek kisses and sat down. Laura would touch her own hair and give the other girl a shy smile every time that she’d say something funny or maybe a compliment.
They talked for hours, and it was beautiful to see Laura loosening more every minute. I’ll call the other girl Iris, because she looks like Iris. So, Iris would caress Laura’s face as Laura would lean against her hand and close her bright black eyes which shine every time they’d look at each other. They held hands and forgot their coffee as the conversation got more intense. They wouldn’t stop talking and I could see their souls meeting. Yeah, maybe I’m too romantic, but, for god’s sake, they’re so beautiful together… By the end of the day the cafe was almost empty then I could hear them. Both got up and before they could say goodbye Laura said:
“Do you want to, I don’t know, walk around the town with me? I really don’t want to say goodbye right now…” — Iris almost jumped at her invite and held her hand as she pulled Laura closer to her.
“Only if you let me buy you a drink, goddess.” — Yeah, Iris called Laura a Goddess, and I could see why. Laura blushed instantly and Iris kissed her lips in a quick but tender kiss. She blushed even more, but then she gave Iris another kiss, this time more passionate and slow. Their hands in each other’s face, caressing each other’s skin, it was like they were made for each other. They ended that kiss with a smile and walked out of the cafe holding hands and laughing at nothing and at everything.
The bartender seemed as happy as I was for witnessing such a beautiful date. I guess I’m not the only romantic soul around here, but I have to admit that their cuteness may have melted most people’s heart.
As I walked out of the cafe my thoughts ran into lots of memories of first dates I had and it was nice to see that not many of them were like that but the ones that did, oh, they became amazing relationships as long as they would last.
I got back home with such a warmness in my heart I guess I could fall in love with a stranger at any minute. I made myself a chai latte, sat at my sofa and decided to marathon romantic movie; I wouldn’t let that beautiful feeling go so fast.
