Unlike the other deep-sea dweller with a similar name, Vampyrotuethis infernalus (the vampire squid), this tiny jelly doesn't spark visions of ghoulish bloodsuckers lurking in the dark. The root of its genus name, vampyro, was inspired by the black pigment that makes it blend into the darkness of the deep pelagic waters where it lives. Scientists don't know how it makes this pigment, but there is some evidence that it absorbs blue light, a common color of deep-sea bioluminescence. Our researchers have only seen this species a few times in over 30 years of deep-sea exploration.
