Santa Carla is a place where the night holds secrets darker than the shadows themselves. The boardwalk gleams under the moonlight, a shimmering array of colors and sounds that lulled both humans and vampires alike.

Those said vampires prowled the night with their senses keen and alert as always as they sought out their next bit of entertainment... or meal. They roamed the boardwalk at night, their shadows blending seamlessly with the darkness, their whispers carrying secrets of centuries past.

On one such night, Paul found himself trailing behind David and the others. The air was thick with anticipation, charged with something new—maybe it was that new strain of weed he'd smoked after they'd woken up.

He could feel the energy tingling on his skin, urging him forward. 

That's when he caught a whiff of something intoxicating, a scent that pulled at the primal instincts buried deep within him. This aroma called out to him like a siren's song.

He glanced at David, whose eyes gleamed with a knowing glint. "Follow your nose, Paul," David murmured, his voice low and commanding.

And so, Paul did. 

He wasn't the best tracker in the group, but he let the tantalizing scent guide him through the mass of people on the boardwalk. Neon lights cast a kaleidoscope of colors on the area, and the air was alive with laughter and music, mingling with the salty tang of the ocean.

With his senses attuned to the mysterious scent that beckoned him, he walked, Marko and Dwayne, flanking him, trying to keep his focal point on that scent. David followed behind as he watched the usually wild vampire, keeping an unusually calm focus.

As Paul ambled along, the intoxicating scent thickened and danced upon the breeze, weaving its way into his senses with a seductive allure. It was unlike anything he had ever encountered, a symphony of sweetness and floral notes that set his veins on fire.

He followed the scent like a moth drawn to flame until he stood before a group of girls, their laughter ringing like chimes in the night.

Without thinking, Paul leaned closer, his nose brushing against the hair of one of the girls. He inhaled deeply, his senses drowning in her scent, which enveloped him like a warm embrace, flooding his senses with a dizzying rush of desire. 

He closed his eyes, savoring the moment, pushing his nose further into her hair, and realized with a jolt of recognition that this was the scent he had been searching for, the one whose scent had called out to him across the night.

Feeling someone touching your hair, you turned around, your eyes wide with surprise, as you caught sight of a guy sniffing you. He was a tall blond with wild hair, but an expression of pure pleasure lit up his handsome features.

Paul could see the confusion flickering in your gaze, the wariness that danced on the edge of your expression. And yet, there was something else there, too, something he couldn't quite name.

You lifted a hand to your hair, your fingers brushing against the spot where he had pressed his nose. The two of you locked eyes for a moment, just gazing at the other.

For a fleeting instant, time stood still. In that moment, Paul saw eternity reflected in the depths of your gaze, a universe of possibilities unfolding before him. But before he could speak, a playful smile danced upon your lips.

Eyes sparkling with mischief, you leaned in to press your nose in his hair and inhale his scent, your expression softening with amusement. "You smell like weed," You remarked with a playful giggle. Your words laced with an enchanting charm that ensnared Paul's senses even further.

Paul blinked, taken aback by your words. He had expected fear, revulsion even, but instead, there was only curiosity. He found himself smiling in response, a warmth spreading through him at the sound of your laughter.

"Can I have some?" You say playfully as Paul takes the joint he had placed behind his ear, the one he had rolled in for himself in excitement for a late-night smoke, and held out to you wordlessly. 

Taking the offered joint, you gave him a surprise laugh as you held it. You thanked him with a sweet smile that he hoped he'd see more of, and he moved to speak.

Before he could say anything, however, your friends appeared at your side, tugging you away with a knowing grin. Paul watched them tug you away, his heart heavy with longing. 

He knew then, with a certainty that bordered on instinct, that he had found his mate.

With a parting glance, you offered him a smile that ignited something deep within his soul, a spark of recognition that left him breathless in its wake. As you disappeared into the crowd, Paul stood rooted to the spot, his mind awash with a whirlwind of emotions.

A hand clapped him on the shoulder, and Paul turned to see Dwayne standing beside him. There was a gleam in Dwayne's eyes, a silent acknowledgment of the bond that had formed between Paul and you just now went beyond human recognition.

"She was something, isn't she?" Dwayne said, his voice low and amused as Marko and David both realized who you were— it looks like they'll be gaining a sister soon.

Paul nodded, unable to tear his gaze away from the spot where you had vanished into the night as his dead heart began to ache, wanting to rush after you. "She's everything," he whispered, his voice barely a breath against the ocean's roar.

Looking at her, he didn’t understand. She wad his type yes but from what he could tell she was only a vampire, she couldn’t have been a witch. So he didn’t know where the pull was coming from.

Even in Alarics body he could feel it. At first he thought the teachers body was attached to her but then he bumped into her in his own form and the attraction was even stronger.

Klaus didn’t like new things and didn’t like feeling things but he also knew if he killed her now then the bloody Salvatores would retaliate and most likely would grab their precious doppelgänger and run. So he left her be but kept a close eye on her.

Following her when he got the chance and learning things about her while trying to find out what kind of trick she was playing on him. She was meant to have been used for the sacrifice, first Caroline replaced her and then Jenna.

And then once he left Mystic Falls with his good friend Stefan, for whatever reason, all he could thing about was her.

Countless dreams haunted him and the urge to draw her face was driving him close to insanity. To begin with he thought perhaps killing her was the best option and then Stefan had to go find Klaus’ stash of sketches of his dear friend Y/n’s face and decided to tell Klaus all about her.

And somehow, hearing about her made him feel less crazy. He found himself asking pointless questions and listening to stories from Stefan. Until of course one of them realised that they were talking about her a little too much and they both awkwardly avoided the topic.

Having her walk straight into him yet again at senior prank night only made his thoughts worse. He loathed how his body reacted so quickly to her, just one inhale of her freshly washed hair and his dick was pressing up against his jeans. His hand grabbed both her arm and the doppelgänger’s before dragging them both back to the main hall. He proceeded with his plan as normal with minimal glances to the girl although he could feel her eyes on him the entire time.

He was entirely unaware she could feel the bond just as well. But she was less cautious about it, she was a teenager and experiencing new feelings. Ones she didn’t understand but she wasn’t a paranoid control freak so she leaned toward the feeling rather than away.

In fact she even followed him occasionally. When she had nothing better to do and wasn’t needed by the group, she tried to dig into his persona. But he was a difficult man to pick apart and she often just went back home when she got bored.

Sometimes she tried to talk to him, or just smile at him but he wasn’t the easiest to communicate with unless he was running the conversation. And she often felt like she was just annoying him so she tried to leave him alone but something just kept leading her back to him and she found it easier to go with it than resist it.

He found her a bit of a nuisance but at least she was a pretty one. And the more she was around him the more he warmed to her. The more beautiful he found her and the dirtier his dreams got.

Eventually he couldn’t handle the amount of time he was spending fucking his own hand and made his way to a witch formation. Only to be faced with the impossible truth.

And then he saw her in a different light. She had both a target on her own back and his back. So he did the one thing he knew how to do really well, push her away.

And god did he push hard. Ignored everything she did or said, avoided her like the plague.

He assumed she had a silly little crush on him and nothing more but he didn’t know she was taking the rejection of the bond so harshly.

Being a vampire it was massively increased and quite frankly it was soul destroying.

He didn’t see the way her skin was greying;the emptying of her eyes. He wasn’t there to see how her mother had to cradle her in bed like she were a small child again. The look in Caroline’s eyes as she tried to get her sister to be excited for their birthday.

What was even more cruel was Klaus coming over to her house to heal Caroline without even checking on her. Giving her twin sister a birthday present but not her? He never spoke to Caroline before, how could they possibly have formed a better friendship than them?

Had she entirely misread everything? Had he not smiled at her with that same look in his eye? Had he not initiated flirtatious interactions and inched closer to her?

She didn’t feel the hunger she used to feel for blood, almost as though it weren’t appetising at all any more. Repulsive even.

Caroline worried beyond relief as she witnessed her sister fading right before her. Stefan and Damon couldn’t get her to eat, Elena and Bonnie couldn’t entertain enough to get her out of bed, nothing was working.

Not until Bonnie offered to do a spell, with Liz’s reluctant permission she performed it to find what was wrong. And the answer both shocked the group and sort of made sense. They had all noticed at some point the strange need they had for each other. But through Damons research in the past when he believed Katherine was his soulmate, he knew what the ultimate result of a rejected mate could be. And as much as he hated Klaus, y/n was like a little sister to him and if she needed him for a little bit then he would push back his revenge for a moment. Plus it would put him in Elena’s good books and Liz’s.

So he let Caroline go and beg Klaus to save her sister.

Klaus wasn’t sure how to respond when Caroline came in with a white oak stake held to his chest while she yelled every offensive word she could at him. He had her by the throat quickly, throwing her off and to a wall but she was straight back at him. Screaming at him asking how he could have done this.

And after a very long back and forth argument, he realised what he was doing to the Forbes girl. But he wasn’t exactly sure how to react.

He knew he was no good for her, he would only be the cause of her death but apparently he would be that anyway. Which he found to be ridiculous but whatever.

But the second Elena let it slip to Rebekah that her brother had a soulmate, she had him by the hair dragging him to the Forbes residence and forcing him inside. Caroline and Liz left the house and Locke them in, despite Klaus being able to break it down.

While in there he couldn’t help but feel the forceful tug towards her room. Her heartbeat was so weak and her scent was fading. He tried to resist the pull like he had forced himself to for so long but hearing her pain filled whimpers as she shifted onto her side had his leg bouncing. Her dry coughs and groans had his teeth biting at the skin around his fingers and finally when she gave a cry out for her sister he got up to go and see her.

His heart hurt seeing her halfway desiccated and he reluctantly came to sit at the edge of the bed. Her eyes were heavy as she peeked up at him, her brows furrowing before a sadness filled her

“Are you here to kill me now?” She rasped and he frowned

“No my dear, no I won’t be killing you” he whispered, he felt bad now that hr had considered doing so in the past but better knowing that he no longer desired to.

“Why not?” She asked confused “you don’t want a soulmate…” she trailed but neither of them said anything because they both knew she was right, he never had wanted a soulmate.

She nodded weakly, sighed softly and relaxed back against the bed. He hesitantly shifted further into the bed, gently pulling her a little closer so her head lay on his lap.

Slowly he brought his fingers to her hair, just gently stroking her as he silently went over his options, wondering what was truly best for each of them in this scenario.

Okay so, the short answer: I love it.

The long(er) answer:

I think not being able to sleep is part of what makes them so fascinating. Like, imagine how damn productive you would be if you had an extra 6-8 hours to get stuff done every day.

...Aight, real talk: I think it's sexy af.

(That was the honest answer.)

Like, vampires are literal predators, and the fact they don't sleep only adds to that feeling of danger. I mean, ofc they won't spend the entire night hunting (I think?), especially considering they only need to hunt like...every few weeks or smt? But it's just the fact they're out (or in) doing...something while everyone else is asleep that's just so fascinating (and sexy) to me. Like, AKSFJSAKLFN-

Listen-

Sleep is something so vital for pretty much any living creature, and the fact (twilight) vampires have no need for it just shows how superior and otherwordly they are.

...I dunno how else to explain my fascination. 🥲

BUT-

I agree that resting the mind is smt that any creature requires at SOME point. And I kinda wanna believe that, sometimes, vampires just lay or stand somewhere (makes no difference to them) and just...close their eyes. Recharge their mental battery. Go into standby, so to speak.

As for the question regarding mates-

Not that canon matters (much) anyway, but I don't think vampires finding their mate à la imprinting is actually canon. But even if it was-

I don't really like the concept because I think it's just boring and lazy and too easy, which is also why I don't include it in any of my writing. Like, I mentioned way back that the reason why The Sisters and MC won't have mating bonds is because I don't want our unhinged Denalis being able to use this as an excuse for their deeds like "ye we kinda uprooted your entire life but it's meant to be so it's kinda alright, right??"

(Spoiler: Tanya's probs gonna try anyway. 😏)

...Granted, not every vampire who meets their "mate" ends up kidnapping them, lol. But like, such a bond essentially "forces" you into loving someone, and that's really off-putting to me. I'm someone who values the journey, y'know what I'm saying? I need drama and spice and a whole lot of working for it. 🫠

Bonding with someone via eye contact is something the wolves have because their instincts basically find them the perfect match to have strong and healthy babies with (or so I've read once), but vampires don't have that need. I mean-

Ofc there's ppl you just click with, right? Then there's ppl you really click with. I'm not saying that kind of connection doesn't exist, but it's not something that suddenly turns your whole axis like it does with the wolves' imprinting thing.

...Then again, I've read once that choosing a partner based on "breeding success" is something that does happen, albeit not consciously. It's like your body just knows who's gonna be a suitable baby daddy/mommy, lol. The power of evolutionary "drives"... 😏

ANYWAY-

My point is:

In my stories (feral or not), imprinting like the wolves have doesn't exist for vampires. You either click or you don't (just like for us humans). However-

I do think that vampires feel things a lot more fiercely than humans. Like, when you live for an eternity, there's gotta be a longing for someone to share it with. The longer you go without, the stronger that longing becomes. All your senses are attuned to finding yourself that perfect match, so it's a lot easier for vampires than it is for us humans to find out whether someone is suitable or not.

Now, to get to the last point(s):

Bc she truly thought he was her mate otherwise she wouldn't have done the things she did in BD2 or would be all angry at bella in BD1

She wasn't actually angry at Bella. She was furious at the Cullens for inviting one of the wolves (Seth) because she believed them to have killed Laurent wrongfully. She didn't believe Edward when he said Laurent was trying to kill Bella first, so she likely felt betrayed by them for inviting the very thing that brutally slaughtered her "mate" (even though it wasn't Seth who did it, but seeing him made her relive that trauma).

The things Irina did in BD2 had nothing to do with Laurent, either. Not really. She went to visit the Cullens to make amends for how she behaved at the wedding, and just for everything that happened after Laurent (denying the Cullens their help in the fight against Victoria & her army because they wouldn't allow Irina to kill one of the wolves to avenge Laurent). But then she spotted CGI Kid (aka Renesmée) and ran for the hills (I don't blame her) because she thought the Cullens created an immortal child. And we all know how that went for her and her family-

...

So ye, everything that went down in BD2 was solely thanks to CGI Kid's existence.

Which makes me hate her (CGI, not Irina) even more.

Honestly, every damn plot would've been better and more engaging than CGI Kid.

...But that's a different story. 🙃

I had never been particularly kind to her. Decades ago, before she became Peter’s mate, she was nothing more than a newborn to me. An average fighter at best, wholly unsuited to the task at hand, easily replaceable. I hadn’t comprehended what he saw in her then. To some extent, I still didn’t. I was too caught up in my mind, imprisoned by depression and bloodlust, to get to know her while I travelled with them. On the rare occasions that we exchanged a few words, she was polite though clearly unable to hide the fear and resentment she harboured towards me. I tolerated her back then because Peter cared about her.

How blind I had been.

The gentle but irrefutable affection that accompanied them on every step, pulsing stronger as Peter tightened his hold of her, made it obvious that it had been the other way round. They had tolerated me. I hadn’t been able to sense it back then, but there was no doubt now. Their bond was just as unbreakable as the one Alice and I shared.

It was a strange sensation, feeling that kind of intimate devotion from someone else; recognizing that what Alice and I had wasn’t unique. However, I didn’t find myself disappointed. Instead, an exceptional gratitude filled me. Finding Charlotte had changed Peter’s life. Caring for her had made him believe that there was something more for them out there, even though he had been told otherwise for the entirety of his second life. Loving her had saved him. And to some extent, it had saved me.
