Almost dying in the North, nearly losing her dragons, and sacrificing half her armies to stop the undead had taken a deep toll on Daenerysโ, both mind and body. Viserion and Rhaegal were able to fly back to Dragonstone under Drogonโs protective presence, but they required several months of rest there on the volcanoโs slope while her armies did the same. The Northerners had sent ravens, first slyly requesting she โhonorโ their alliance, then demanding that she remove Cersei. Daenerys burned every scroll. They had used her peopleโs lives without regard and then had declared themselves โindependentโ. Not her people.
Dany wasnโt bitter, no. She was tired and grieving. Ser Jorahโs life hung in the balance, sleeping without waking in the Maesterโs tower, but Ser Selmy had lost his life and with his passing, her last connection to family was gone. When her dragons and army were ready, Captain Ashaโs fleet arrived and soon enough, they were landing on the shore close to the walls of Volantis. Ashaโs Ironborn took the bay while Unsullied and Dothraki pulled Volantian ships onto the beach and tore them apart to create catapults.
While her armies besieged the outer walls, ย Daenerys guided her dragons to destroy guard towers and armaments, sending Volantian nobles scurrying behind their black walls, but what they hadnโt expected was their own slaves turning against them. For eight days, it was chaos, street to street fighting, her dragons burning holes in the black walls while slaves streamed out of the city. Behind the black walls where Unsullied fought Unsullied, the fighting was fiercest, but some slaves slit the throats of their masters in their sleep and threw open their doors.
Each day, Greyworm brought petrified dragon eggs to her tent, dozens of them found in vaults, but one evening just before dusk, he came with a look of astonishment, whispering two words - live dragon. Her heart pounding, Daenerys raced to the enormous compound, and entering the courtyard behind, her heart was in her throat. A massive silver and gold dragon was tethered to the rear wall by a thick chain leading to a collar studded with gemstones that glowed brightly. Dany could feel the sickening sensation of dark magic hanging in the air, as she had in the House of the Undying.ย
The dragonโs eyes blinked and in the low light, Dany could see the molten shimmer of lavender, almost violet eyes watching her as she moved closer. This was magic beyond anything she had ever encountered and it frightened her, but Dany would not leave the dragon. Holding out one small hand as she approached, Daenerys declared.ย โYouโre a handsome one, arenโt you. I have three dragons that will protect you, sweetling. I wonโt hurt you.ย No one will ever hurt you again. Will you let me try to take that off? I donโt know if I can - there is powerful magic here, but I will not leave you.โ
She walked slowly towards the dragon that towered above her, knowing that at any moment, his massive silver jaws could descend upon her, small fingers smoothing over warm scales until they touched the collar. The sizzle of magic charged up along her arm and Daenerys knew she couldnโt hesitate. Drawing her Valyrian steel Arakh from her belt, Dany slammed it on the lock as hard as she could and an explosion of force overwhelmed her, throwing Daenerys to the ground dazed and struggling to withstand the horrifying force of the unleashed dark magic. Her vision swam, her head spinning. Dimly, Dany was aware of Jhogo at her side, cursing in Dothraki.
