The Rita - The Nylons of Laura Antonelli (2009)
Utmarken's Livets Stav in a two-man live performance. My old sort-of-okay translation of it is here, I should probably re-do it though since I could do a better job now, plus I have the actual lyrics now instead of the transcribed-by-ear ones (which are like 80% correct), in the inlay of their newest album... but I'm away from home atm so I don't have the CD here. Still, I like this performance, and the song is better if you understand what it's about, so here you go I suppose.
With this post I have now posted every single song from Utmarkenâs âSvĂ„ra Ă„râ album. Mainly because they have released so many singles before releasing the album itself earlier this year. But the album is also of such high quality. I like some tracks more than others, but there isnât a single bad song on there.
Oh I like how tumblr now has dropped that old anti-spam mechanism where it would only show like 2 or 3 consecutive posts by you in any given tag, even if there were months between them because itâs âobviously spamâ. Now people can see how much Iâve been posting about Utmarken over the years. Ha! Once they get their deserved fame, I will have ALL THE HIPSTER CRED! MUHAHAHA!

Time for another song from this badass album.
Up-and-coming folk metal
This is my very short quality-over-quantity list of my favourite promising, half-discovered folk metal bands of the moment.
Boisson Divine (France)
I have to look up the name of their language every time. Itâs a regional language - not a dialect - called Gascon. Clean vocals, a melodic and pleasant sound, but without sounding generic or commercial, this is music I can listen to every day.
Utmarken (Sweden)
Utmarken have actually been among my absolute favourites for a couple of years already, but Iâm including them anyway, because their first two albums are criminally underrated and it seems theyâre starting to gain more traction with the third one. A mix of folk, power and heavy metal with great clean vocals, the nyckelharpa or âkeyed fiddleâ as solo instrument, and, despite the often dark lyrical subject matter, tons of energy and drive.
They also have an even more nyckelharpa-centric heavy folk sister project called Norrsinnt.
KallomÀki (Finland)
KallomĂ€ki have a darker sound than the other entries on this list. Whatâs characteristic about them is the home-built electric tagelharpa that plays a central role in their songs. Imagine if someone took Korpiklaaniâs music, killed it and brought it back to life as an undead monstrosity. Thatâs KallomĂ€ki. Uh, I mean that as a compliment.
Zmey Gorynich (Russia)
This band from Moscow is definitely the strangest entry on this list. I discovered them on VK by coincidence one day. Try listening to an entire album of theirs and you will definitely be surprised a number of times by the sudden, often comedic twists and turns the songs take. Theyâve got growls, theyâre got symphony, theyâve got... schlager? Fun fair music..? They... I donât...
Fun. They have fun.
At a lonely farm, along a remote path stands a man, alone, with his eyes fixed on the sky He has walked there in solitude for so many years and seen signs and portents with his inner sight.
"I have tilled my land, I have sowed what I've sowed I have tried to tell folk but few have listened. You have made your choice! Now the axe shall fall! Now the die is cast and the reckoning has come!"
Jag skĂ„dar paniken med lugn i mitt sinnâ Jag vet vad som vĂ€ntar nĂ€r fĂ„ren till slut kallas in He schkoâ snart börjâ Ă„ brinnâ...â
"I see the panic with my mind at peace I know what awaits when the sheep are finally called in. Soon it will start burning..."
