Undertale, Feminism, The Media, and You.
I saw a post going around recently basically quoting a prominent review of UT that said “Undertale proves that videogames are ready for Feminism/there are gay characters” etc.
The post then proceeded to spout out crap like “no. Undertale wasn’t successful because of feminism. It was successful because of good gameplay. Feminism is crap and didn’t have a thing to do with Undertale’s success.”
Okay. I’ll go ahead and yield all their points (except that feminism is crap.)
They’re still missing the point of the article. The point is not that Undertale was successful because of inclusivity–it was that it was successful in spite of it–something that previously would have made a game hated and despised. Instead, UT a game that happens to be getting all time highs everywhere, just so happens to have queerness and lady-positivity out the butt.
Progressiveness didn’t make Undertale successful. UT was successful in spite of that.
And that says a whole lot about how far gaming has come
It proves that Gaming is ready for this shit. (Which was what the original quote was actually saying in the first place.)
