(little fool, little fool) Maria Spector and Ciaran Groarke collaboration. 14” x 12” 2020. Collage and paint on paper. New #uspsartproject collaboration completed with the wonderful artist Maria Spector @mariaspectorart - who mailed me her hand painted “The Fool” Tarot card, from her series appropriated from the Rider Waite-Smith Tarot Deck originally illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith circa 1909.I reproduced the lovely endpaper via color copier and collaged it into a decorative pattern, inserting the fool card randomly. I then distressed the piece with water and ModgePodge, and lastly hand painted with gouache and ink. I felt the piece is a comment on the artists hand versus technology and reproduction, as well as a dance between abstract expressionist “fine” art, and commercial, decorative art. The whole High/Low discussion in art history.
