AHHHH, YAY!  I'm not sure why i don't talk more about Jonathan.  I guess becuse I spend all my time talking about Dio.

Right that's the other thing, I do think he was limited by the need to not overshadow Funny and also....... I suspect Araki kind of wanted to be freed from the whole Dio legacy thing, but its kinda. Like Dio is too big a name not to get a shoutout, but at the same time he's also such a big name that he's in danger of being the assumed big bad - I have to admit, before I looked into what Steel Ball Run was, I assumed Diego would somehow be as big a deal as Dio, too.

Uhh, point being, he couldn't really be DIO, it'd be like putting Jotaro in SBR, like everyone would be staring at him.

wow i think i don't know anybody who dislikes Diego or has this kind of opinion about him, so it was great to read it! i like both dio and diego in almost the same level, because of their things in common and also the differences.

Eh, I mean I don't really dislike him.  I'm just kind of apathetic - I'm not sure whether his Dioness works for or against him for me, because on one hand I feel like I'm annoyed at him for not being more... epic, because he's Dio so he should be epic. I kept thinking, "wow Diego why can't you be more awesome like Dio?" Whichs is obviously an unfair comparison, but at the same time, I feel like if it werent for the Dio shoutouts I'm not sure I'd even remember Diego very well. >_> So, I guess the knife cuts both ways, sob.

But yeah, I know hes really popular, at least in the western fandom. Not sure about Japan - I don't see a lot of official or unofficial merchandise ith him and he's not in ASB....

TBH I'm not sure I even understand Jolyne/Weather.  I'm just not sure where it came from.  I mean, I don't have anything AGAINST it, it just.... never would have occurred to me.

ship with: Zero people!  You know… I don’t actually ship that much, just in general.  Everytime I do these memes I remember that, sob.

brotp: I guess Hot Pants, but only in theory since I wasn’t really invested in their relationship or anything.  I was deeply amused by his thing with Magenta Magenta.

general opinions:  So here’s the thing.  Diego isn’t that different than Dio, right?  He’s got a similar backstory, a similar hunger, a similar personality.  I know a lot of people perceive him as “nicer” than Dio but I don’t - he’s introduced with “he married an old lady and murdered her for money” which basically puts him at PB, pre-vampire, Dio levels of douchebaggery to me seeing as that's exactly what he did with George, aside from swapping adoption for marriage.  And while I’ve seen it said that Dio preferred slavish followers and Diego preferred partners, I don’t think that’s really true - Diego wasn’t above using people without reciprocation (Magenta Magenta) and Dio, despite routinely being surrounded by groupies, showed a preference for people who had their own minds (Jonathan, Pucci).  I might even say that, in this case, the big difference to me was that Dio is a more imposing and charismatic figure (largely due to being a vampire/godlike stand user) whereas Diego is a 20 year old jockey and thus didn’t have a lot of people willing to die for him. 

 I guess you could say the primary difference to me was that Diego never became a cultfigure/nonhuman superbeing (dinosauring doesnt count) and is instead kind of perpetually “stuck” in the more human ambition and mindset of pre-stone mask Dio.  Which is to say, instead of trying to conquer the world, he’s trying to get money and political power.  And he’s still sort of stuck in the class warfare/grudge that Dio grew up in but ultimately (mostly) grew out of when he came to see himself as transcending those issues by being outside of the societies/species that created them.  This is even kind of backed up by the alternate universe Dio, who has OU!Dio’s godlike overpowered stand and is therefore starting to develop OU!Dio’s lofty sadistic and distant attitude, not to mention his penchant for sexualized violence.

So to me, in a lot of ways, they really are… the same person, and MUCH moreso than any of the other counterparts could be said to be.

Except Diego is written to be more “nuanced,” and thus more human, I guess, and less over the top much like all of SBR is less over the top than the previous JoJo world’s stuff, so he’s a bit more human in presentation.  And therein lies my issue with him, because a lot of the reason I love Dio, original recipe, is that he IS so over the top and limitless and without boundaries or borders and the way he’ll just do what he wants and the way he struts in his skin and the way he’s so unrepentantly himself even though what he is is a monster.  I love that he knocks cats’ heads off and smirks while he terrorizes politicians and throws steamrollers around and screams USELESS and laughs, like he’s so. Epicly over the the top and extraordinary he’s like a force of nature and Diego’s still… a 20 year old jockey.

A 20 year old jockey who’s obsessed with petty human things and has all of Dio’s issues but none of his grandiosity, and as a result he just ends up coming off kind of desperate and sad to me.  And while I love that in some characters (e.g. Griffith), it has to be done in a certain way - it has to be kind of balanced out, I guess, by greatness.   Otherwise the character just strikes me as kind of like… a little pathetic, and I just can’t like pathetic characters, they bother me too much.

Still, there’s enough of Dio in him that I have some fondness for him.  I like the AU!Diego a lot more than the original one, though.

i agree so much!! i hate when people compare them too. they’re so different??? it’s probably bc all people who read berserk actually don’t know how to read and think Griffith is ~evil~ from the start or whatever.

There are some superficial similarities, is the thing - they both start out in the underclass and claw their way to the upper echelons of society. They're both ambitious. They have explicit and implicit undertones of sexual violence/rape (in Dio's case it's more implicit unless you count Diego 2 and/or accept Erina's stolen kiss as the metaphor it was). They both commit betrayals on those who love them.

But these things have a completely different context in each character.
