Okay so the thing with Robbie Thompson framing Cas deciding not to to risk Sam’s life in First Born as being about his ~experiences as a human~ is a) it’s nonsense (Robbie Thompson actually think about Cas’s s8 arc at least challenge) and b) it leans into that gross thing spn loves of implying that being human is ~better somehow~. It’s bad.
But also there’s just way more interesting stuff to do there? Like, what Cas is looking at here is a person risking their life in a semi-symbolic attempt to make up for their perceived failures, which kind of makes a very apt parallel for someone who’s just eaten stolen grace that will slowly kill them in order to try remedy having played a part in causing the angels to fall. Or indeed, you know, just tying to everything about Cas since godstiel. And the episode nearly gets it (“the only person who has screwed things up more consistently than you...is me”) but immediately undercuts it with somehow thinking guilt is a new thing for Cas when no, obviously, not at all, and that’s the hook!! The interesting angle here is Cas looking at such a direct parallel to himself (whether he recognises it or not! Personally I love it when the angel is unselfaware ❤️) and how he responds to that! It’s got nothing to do with ~humanity or “Winchesters run[ning] towards death”; it’s Cas being faced with someone very like himself and getting to show them the compassion that he doesn’t think he deserves. This is all literally right there and instead we decide to completely wave away the last four seasons of Cas’s interiority and pretend that he learnt something from being human other than being abandoned and terrified.
