In the middle of the night when I’m in this dream it’s like a million little stars spelling out your name...
OLIVIA RODRIGO - BRUTAL
[ ID: Two gifs of Olivia Rodrigo from her ‘Brutal’ music video. First gif is her in a blue wig in front of a group of ballerinas and a city background. Her face is covered in cartoon eyes. The cartoon eyes and her real eyes are crying cartoon tears, Second gif is Olivia in pigtails singing into the camera. There are two ballerinas dancing on top of cars behind her. Her face is covered in crying cartoon eyes. The tears are traveling up her face back into the eyes. End ID. ]
I’m so sorry if you’ve answered this question before, but have you read the Crimson Peak novelization? Is it worth reading? I recently got into Crimson Peak as well as gothic literature and I’m curious about the novel. Thank you so much!!
I'm...not a fan.
I've talked about this before, but my objections boil down to "the author flattens the characters like crazy, and clearly grudges any film characterization for Lucille that's even vaguely sympathetic."
(She defended Thomas as a child? Well, it was ACTUALLY self-serving, and JUST TO MANIPULATE HIM INTO FEELING INDEBTED TO HER! She expressed love and concern for him during the events of canon, even in her desperately possessive way? NO SHE DIDN'T! Also her room is FULL OF ~WEIRD CREEPY WET SPECIMENS IN JARS~ SO THERE.)
(Spoiler if you didn't look closely: her room is staggeringly normal in the movie. And she, you know. Genuinely loves her brother, even though that love makes his life immeasurably worse in the long run. To my mind, it's more horrifying if she really loves him, because that raises questions for the audience about whether love is always a good thing. But I digress.)
There are a lot of little things that made me doubt the author's dedication to faithfully adapting the movie in general, too. Like eye colors- she was always getting them wrong. From insisting on page one that Edith's eyes are "cornflower blue"- the first damn shot of the movie is a close-up of her face, brown eyes and all -to calling Lucille's green in one scene and brown in another. It's a minor issue, but in combination with other nitpicks, adds up to a big lack of focus on the film being adapted.
In short, would not recommend.
