Excerpt:

Zay didn’t want to worry his parents so he did what he could to not cause them alarm. Well, he tried. The way he looked and the way he talked was too much for some people. But he’d been safe. He’d kept his nose clean. He had some really good friends. And he followed one of them to New York (after his dad got transferred), where the way he looked and the way he talked wasn’t much of an issue anymore. He somehow just blended in with everyone else, and in time he forgot to be aware of what he was doing in sight of others. His parents didn’t seem concerned about him there either. That was the problem with feeling safe. New York City was a minefield of criminal activity, and yet the first time Zay crossed paths with it was Tuesday in the so-called safety zone that was his school.
