Harvey Thomas Dunn was born in Manchester, South Dakota and went on study art at various schools. His paintings were beautiful, and he was well-known as a skilled artist and eventually professor. He, alongside many other artists were commissioned by the United States Army Art Program to paint depictions of WW1. This was one of those paintings.
