The Sentry (1918) - Harvey Thomas Dunn (1884-1952) [United States of America]
Oil on canvas [62.3cm x 75cm]
[Image Description. A WW1 American soldier sits alone in trench. He is completely dissociated, and in the fine details of the painting his one-thousand yard stare is evident. Lying on the ground before him is some military equipment, including his rifle with bayonet, some hand grenades in a line, and two stick-grenades. The environment is drab and almost colorless. End ID.]
Harvey Thomas Dunn was born in Manchester, South Dakota and went on study art at various schools. His paintings were beautiful, and he was well-known as a skilled artist and eventually professor. He, alongside many other artists were commissioned by the United States Army Art Program to paint depictions of WW1. This was one of those paintings.
