I really wish that Urthstripe and Mara got a chance to see each other again and just talk to each other. Reading that Mara thought of him as a father was so sad, she never got the chance to say it to him while he was alive.
Oh, absolutely! The fact that she never got to tell him through words is heartbreaking.
As an adult (who still very much remembers her teen years), the way Mara acted is how many teens with strict parents react to protocol. Really, Urthstripe truly got the fathering experience, whether he knew it or not!
I don't think the lack of chance for them to talk it out was on accident. That moment was definitely made to tug on our young heartstrings. Brian Jacques put a lot of lessons in his writing, and to me that moment teaches "Work out the problems with those you love now, because tomorrow may not come."
I still struggle with that personally. I could still learn from their relationship, because some day that moment will come for me (and all of us) and I don't want what "could have been" floating around until the end.
