Jorge Luis Borges is scarier than H,P. Lovecraft to me.
When I lived in Buenos Aires, I had a dream once. It was a cinematic experience of the city. Set to accordion music, I zoomed in on a street corner cafe full of life and happy people. It was a postcard of the city. Then I realised that the city is in a symbiotic relationship with its inhabitants, they get to enjoy living there, and the city feeds off of them. On a different level than other cities do. It’s sentient in a way, so it needs there to be movement and thoughts and emotions.
Related to it were my depressed waking thoughts about Buenos Aires being haunted by the ghost of the forest that previously grew there.
Borges is like that, but he deals with ideas and words.
The way the concept of Uqbar was presented had me scared like I rarely am. The resolution was okay, but the build-up had me aghast.
One of Tlön’s schools manages to refute time, reasoning that the present is indeterminate, that the future has no reality except as present hope, and that the past has no reality except as present memory. - Tlön, Uqbar, Orbius Tertius by Jorge Luis Borges
“Mirrors and copulation are abominable, for they multiply the number of mankind.”
Bioy Casares in Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius by Jorge Luis Borges.

Gauchos, tangos, and the nature of reality. That takes me back. Does anyone still read Borges?
Lewis s2 ep5, The Allegory of Love
Uqbar
