I’m watching Your Lie in April and I think I finally figured out why I really hate the move Whiplash. Hurting yourself to achieve something artistically is offensive. Working hard is fine, but in that movie it goes beyond that. That college student gets emotionally abused and nearly kills himself over it. In Your Lie in April that idea literally died with Kōsei’s mother. Kaori doesn’t think that way. It’s healing. Art is supposed to be the thing that makes you well, not the thing that kills you.
