Lockdown and Covid-19

Lockdown was a time of uncertainty, of loneliness. Many of us sought comfort in companionship, in the unwavering loyalty of a dog, who asked for nothing but love in return. We brought them into our homes, into our lives, into our hearts. But when the world opened back up, when our routines returned, some of us did the unthinkable. While breeders may work to ethical standards in terms of looking after the dogs before they find new homes, profiting significantly from breeding them, raises ethical concerns. We Left them Behind The shelters are full of neglected, abandoned, and forgotten dogs. The dogs who once curled up beside you during endless days of isolation now sit in cold kennels, bewildered and afraid. The ones who once wagged their tails at the sound of our voices now flinch at every noise, unable to understand why they were given up. What Changed? When did they become inconvenient? When did their presence no longer fit into our schedules, our lifestyles?

The commitment we made to them, in those lonely months, was discarded as quickly as yesterday’s news. Instead, they wait in crates that will never open for them. They are confused, heartbroken. Some abandoned into 'kill' shelters waiting to die, when no one reclaims them. I adopted one of those dogs – the dog you abandoned to the shelter. The one you left behind. Regardless of your circumstances, you should have found her a new home. I've seen the fear in her eyes, her hesitations, her uncertainty.

It's taken months for her to trust, she didn't believe she was safe. She didn't know how to play. She struggled to eat, she wasn't even sure if she should, or that she was even allowed. It will take time, but we show her everyday that love isn’t temporary, that she is wanted and that she finally belongs. She has a warm bed, and the safety she should have always known – that should have been hers in the bucket loads. She is learning to trust again.

But what about the others? The ones still waiting? The ones sitting behind shelter walls, day in day out, waiting to be picked, watching every passing stranger, hoping against hope that someone will take them home, or the ones waiting to die when no one picks them? We Must Do Better A dog is not a novelty or a temporary fix for loneliness, to fill a void. A dog is for life, a soul that feels. If we cannot commit to them fully, then we should never bring them into our lives at all. Please, let’s start treating animals as they deserve to be treated – they're not disposable commodities, they are family.
