Lynn Conway passed away this weekend. She was an electrical engineer whose professional work was instrumental in enabling virtually all modern semiconductor devices. She was fired from IBM, and lost her family for transitioning, and later came out and became an outspoken transgender activist.
Rest Easy, Lynn, the world is less for your absence.
Oops! Another pre-transmigration CumPlane thought. They dated in high school and experienced what was essentially an end-of-the-season dramatic break-up. While it ends on amicable terms, there's still an air of regret that doesn't leave.
They go to different universities, (note: I gave Airplane a HC name). Luo Huachen (Airplane) works a bunch of one-off odd jobs and bureaucratic bullshit, and Shen Yuan just kind of... shuts himself off from the world. They have each other's numbers, but never seeks the other out; a desire for connection, whatever it may persist.
When they both die, they both start out as babies in Proud Immortal Demon Way.
Shen Yuan as Shen Xue (Shen Jiu before he got numbered) doesn't realize he's in PIDW until meeting Yue Qi and connecting the dots.
Meanwhile, Luo Huachen lives as Shang Qinghua, and still is very aware of the lore he created of his own characters. With the help of the System (which, yes, is actually somewhat helpful here! ...only to Luo Huachen though), he does what he can to stop some of the bad things from happening.
[ Host can earn BS-Points (Better Story Points, Obviously!) by making decisions that: Ensuring a happier outcome for the story; inciting important plot points earlier or later in the timeline; adding depth to the cast of characters; etc. ]
Luo Huachen has to earn a set amount of BS-Points by a certain prequel plot-points (i.e. plot points only Luo Huachen knows) to prevent/minimize the hurt of specific tragic events from happening in the future.
There are some more details to this, but I'm rambling at this point.
He doesn't have a lot of power as a 13-year-old, but he's began cultivating already, and started on Cang Qiong earlier than canon SQH. Already a lot more opportunities to incite some changes to the plot.
When he realizes, on a low-stakes nighthunt with the current An Ding Peak Lord and a few other disciples— they're close to the place where Shen Jiu and Yue Qi would be hiding out. Deciding he'll deal with the consequences later, he completes his tasks and flies off without his shizun or martial siblings noticing.
[ Host as unlocked: Hidden Quest! - "7 and 9" ]
[ Objective: Find Yue Qi and Shen Jiu before -HIDDEN EVENT- and -HIDDEN EVENT- occur! ]
[ Completion of quest awards +1000 BS-Points. Failure to complete quest will result in a penalty of -1500 BS-Points ]
Look, grinding for BS-Points was hard. It's been a lot easier since getting to Cang Qiong, but it was still so fucking hard. That's the most points for one quest he's seen so far! The penalty is steep, but...
Yue Qi still gets found by the traffickers, but Luo Huachen is able to get both him and Shen Jiu to a safe hiding space before confronting the people trying to take them. He discreetly sets off an emergency talisman to alert his Shizun, before readying himself to fight off a bunch of grown adults on his own.
They know of his robes, they know he's a disciple, but they underestimate him.
Or, rather, they don't estimate him at all.
An Ding Peak wasn't known for strong warriors, but too often, people forget that they're cultivators all the same.
By the time his Shizun arrives, he is a little roughed up, but the adults he was just fighting are on the ground.
Shizun is about to scold him for getting himself into danger and running off, but is quickly able to assess what happened. Luo Huachen had coaxed Shen Jiu and Yue Qi out of hiding, assuring them that it was safe.
Curiously, Shen Jiu looked completely and utterly lost. Having written him, he expected Shen Jiu, at this point, to be much more hissy at him. Instead, he looked like his world was flipped over his head.
And hey, why is Yue Qi glaring so hard at him and looming behind Shen Jiu like that?! They were protective of each other on the streets, sure! But, this kind of hostility from Yue Qi after he'd just saved them wasn't right— Was it?
... Maybe he was overthinking it. He wrote their backstories years ago. He also did just change the course of Shen Jiu's youth.
Well! He will continue changing that course.
"Shizun," Luo Huachen starts quietly, "can we do something to help them?"
The previous generation's An Ding Peak Lord had been in a similar situation as the young scum villain and future sect leader. Though, unlike either of them, she'd channel that trauma into fervently teaching her students on survival and staying hidden. To be unexpected. Not a perfect Shizun by all means.
"Do you still have the qi to carry them both by sword?"
"To where?"
"The inn, where you were supposed to go after you gave your report to your shixiong."
Not dignifying the subtle scolding with a response, he nods. "Yeah."
"Then, go. I'll deal with these..." Her eyes flick down to the traffickers on the ground. She sucks her teeth in disgust. "... gentlemen. I'll send out an alert to Zhangmen-shidi to look this over too. For now, rest."
Shen Jiu and Yue Qi are given some light soup, at the inn, and the An Ding disciples don't make a big deal out of them. Mostly because they're tired, but also because Shizun had been very thorough in reminding them that homeless children weren't spectacles to be gawked at. They also got cleaned up, and each go a pair of spare, simple robes from the An Ding disciples that matched their sizes the closest.
Shizun eventually comes back, talks about being busy for the next few weeks after this mission. Surprisingly, she tells him to get Shen Jiu and Yue Qi onto the mountain.
It took... a couple hours of coaxing
"Please. I promise you, you'll be okay," he says again. "Come to Cang Qiong with me."
With that, a notification from the System pops up.
[ 🎉🎉 Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations! Import things must be said three times! Host has successfully completed the Objective: Find Yue Qi and Shen Jiu before the get separated! Stop Shen Jiu from being sold to the Qiu family! — Host has been granted +1000 BS-Points! ]
Fast-forward, and both Shen Jiu and Yue Qi are being treated on Qian Cao Peak, and Huachen is peeking in to see how his characters characters are doing.
Shen Jiu is... talking to himself? He isn't trying to be quiet, either. Odd, because Yue Qi's a light sleeper, right? ... Maybe they tranquilized him. He'll unpack that thought later.
Seriously... Was he just remembering things about his story wrong? That was possible. Updating PIDW as much as he did, he wasn't a star at keeping track.
He absolutely doesn't expect the words coming from Shen Jiu's mouth when he listens closely.
"Stupid author! Why didn't he explain any of this shit in the story! That's so much depth! First, Shen Qingqiu being trafficked, and apparently— No, but... that can't be right."
Shen Jiu looks up, seemingly glaring at something in the air that Luo Huachen can't see.
"If this is Proud Immortal Demon Way, why would Shang Qinghua... It... It could be a relative, right? Ugh... Wouldn't put it past Airplane shooting Towards the Sky to leave that out too."
Holy shit.
Not keeping up with Head Disciple formalities, Luo Huachen steps it, ignoring the surprised squawk that comes from Shen Jiu's throat. With all the grace of your average 13-year-old trying to make a new friend, he stands right in front of his cot.
"Proud Immortal Demon Way," he says.
"What the actual fuck?" the newly-found fellow transmigrator says a bit too loud.
After pulling some strings and managing to get permission from the Cang Qiong Head Disciple, he takes Shen Jiu to a quiet study room, puts up some silencing talismans.
"My name's Luo Huachen." He says it without really thinking. But god, it just feels so... so good to say his real name. It was easier when it with Shang Qinghua's parents since they'd always call him 'A-Chen' or 'Xiao Chen,' which is what he was called in chidlhood as well.
And also, they were likely both dead in that world they originally came forom. It wasn't like it was the same as sharing your real name online! Neither of them were even supposed to exist here.
Shen Jiu looks like he has something caught in his throat.
Luo Huachen backtracks.
"You don't have to share yours if you're uncomfortable," he assures, not wanting to scare off the only connection he has to his original life. "I just miss—"
"Shen Yuan."
What?
Luo Huachen must've said that out loud, because not-Shen Jiu repeats himself.
"My name is Shen Yuan."
Living in the world he created was... an interesting experience. Luo Huachen felt detached for a bit of time before he was hit in the face when he nearly lost Shang Qinghua's— his— father of this world. He wasn't some stand-in for original Shang Qinghua to them. He was the son they knew.
He didn't want to, but he cared.
And it was scary, and very isolating. Nobody knew what was going to happen if things didn't change, and nobody knew of the world he'd lived before waking up here.
But now...
Oh.
Oh, god. That means Shen Yuan had to live through...
"Do you have a System?"
Shen Yuan smiles bitterly. "That blue motherfucker is on my ass about everything. How's yours treating you?"
Turns out, the System is not as kind to Shen Yuan as it is to Luo Huachen. The OOC feature was a bit more lax because this part of PIDW was never published, but was still something looming over Shen Yuan. Something something Shen Yuan getting some of Shen Jiu's traits naturally because of his situation etc. etc.
Before Luo Huachen came in to disrupt the plot, Shen Yuan was bound to the fate of tragically separating from Yue Qi in some form at this time.
Sheepishly, Luo Huachen admits his experience. He talks about minimizing the risk of falling into the bad ending, how he can override certain system stuff if another user is a named character that mattered in the plot, etc.
"Dude, how's that fair?!" He sounds irritated, but his gaze softens quickly afterwards. "Sorry..." he mumbles. "Glad it's not hurting you so bad, and thank you for getting me out, but... How'd you do it? Is it just luck?"
Oh boy.
"Because I'm the author."
Luo Huachen doesn't know what to expect. He expects him to be angry at him for writing all the bullshit he has to go through now, for the world of PIDW to have jaded him.
"Pfft—"
He doesn't expect Shen Yuan to stifle a laugh behind his hand, looking him with a tired, but amused expression. It was kind of weird to see on Shen Jiu's face, almost like it'd form into Shen Yuan's itself.
"I can't believe you wrote that shitty novel, Huachen-ge!"—he's looking away from Luo Huachen, patting his own face to stop himself from losing composure, and completely oblivious to the fond smile forming on Luo Huachen's face—"With all those shitty papapa scenes and that shitty shitty ending? God. You're such a goddamn hack!"
"Hack author." Ah. A phrase he's all too familiar with.
Man, he wonders how Peerless Cucumber is. For all his harsh words, he saw Airplane's vision and potential. The ending was so shit, maybe it killed him.
Since Shen Yuan read PIDW, he wonders if he's familiar with—
It finally settles in that his ex-boyfriend read his webnovel and now knows he's the author and—
"Wait! Wait! How much did you read, A-Yuan?!"
"All of it! Every single chapter!"
"You're a fan?!" Luo Huachen did not see PIDW as something his— as something Shen Yuan would read. Let alone read all of.
"Oh absolutely not! First off—"
They're interrupted when a Qian Cao disciple knocks and requests to use to room, the both of them aplogize and leave the room. If Shen Yuan holds Luo Huachen's sleeve, most onlookers either assume it's because it's just the An Ding Head Disciple being kind to their new patient, or they just don't say anything.
Of course, they still have a lot to talk about and work through. The world of PIDW is not kind, and it doesn't help when they're a glowing blue jackass breathing down your neck. They were both cut off from everything they've ever knew so suddenly, and had to repeat groiwng up but in situations much different than either were used to.
They'll get there someday.
Bonus: Years later, Luo Binghe stills gets into Qing Jing Peak, but his Shizun is nice, and his Shibo is also always visiting him to support him.
And then Luo Binghe's all like "Shizun and Shibo are mine now :) ... And Ning-shijie's too, I guess. Do I have to share them with Ming Fan??? >:("
"Luo Binghe," Yue Qingyuan starts, exasperated, having had this conversation many times before. "Your Shizun and Shibo are teachers of dozens of disciples. Shibo is from a different peak entirely."
"But they're my Baba and A-Die!!!"
"... What?"
(( I wrote the first tags after writing about their original lives, so they are like, two different thought processes. I did not intend this at all. The lore demons took me. I'm so sorry oh god. ))
(( I just looked and how the fuck is this 2k words what the fuck ))
