Olive is already used to thinking about the difference between her real life and her life online. The real Olive doesn’t have a lot of romantic prospects. Sometimes she looks okay, sometimes she looks good, and sometimes she looks ugly. But online, Olive can apply filters to her selfies until they look perfect. And one of her closest relationships is with a boy she’s never met in real life.
Olive wants to spend her time creating art, but she knows that she probably won’t be able to earn enough money to make a living that way. Her mother knows it, too, which is why she arranged for Olive to have a summer internship with a digital imaging specialist. When Olive learns about retouching software and virtual models, she realizes that the things she sees every day in print and digital advertisements are more deceptive than she ever imagined.
