I will be glad when 2024 is over because Americans will finally stop sharing that fucking star trek meme about Irish reunion like it's prophecy. It's just sheer ignorance of the political situation in NI.
While Sinn Fein do hold most of the seats in Stormont, explicitly republican parties (SF and the SDLP) did not form a majority of vote share in 2024. They got approximately 38% of vote share. Explicitly unionist parties (DUP, UUP, TUP, and the independent in North Down) by contrast got 43% of the vote share. If we assume alliance voters are happy enough with the status quo, this puts the "keep shit as is" vote at 58%.
Irish republicans in NI have to shift mountains to get what they want. It's comparatively easy for unionists, because they represent the status quo position in the region. I would personally not be expecting anything until the explicit republican vote is nearing 60%, which will either happen within the next 2-4 elections (given the older, strongly unionist boomer generation is passing away) or not for a very, very long time.

Talking to my conservative dad about union politics and it's going about as well as expected. I'm trying to explain to him that "crime" and "criminal" are buzzwords that don't mean anything and that I see things in terms of their morality rather than their legality. The light is slowly draining from his eyes as I explain to him the ways in which I myself am technically a criminal.
