Tartan Decome

This is the Union Jack that flew from HMS Royal Sovereign during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, the flagship of Newcastle born Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, Nelson's second-in-command.

Measuring 152.5 x 274.5cm, the flag bears visible signs of battle, including gunpowder stains and splinter tears, and is just one of three known to have survived from Trafalgar.

More than 500 sailors from Tyne and Wear served in Nelson's fleet during the battle, many aboard the Royal Sovereign itself, in a conflict that saw the death of Nelson, several thousand casualties overall, and the collapse of Napoleon's plans to invade Britain.

North East Museums has now bought the flag for £450,000, using £400,000 from the National Heritage Memorial Fund alongside further donations, after a government export bar prevented it from leaving the country. The group is crowdfunding a further £250,000 to create a permanent display for it at Newcastle's Discovery Museum.
