Ivory Unguent Box of Queen Nefertari This lenticular ivory 𓍋𓃀𓅱𓌟 “3bw” box with a sharp 𓋴𓏚𓂧𓌪 “spd” shoulder and flat swivel lid sits on a cylindrical foot. Around the outer edge of the lid and on one of the flat surfaces for the knobs used to close the container are incised circles. The tiny figure of a hedgehog 𓎛𓆰𓈖𓏏𓍔𓄿𓄛 “ḥnt3”, associated with the cycle of death 𓅓𓏏𓀐 “m(w)t” and rebirth 𓄙𓅓𓏜𓄟𓋴𓅱𓏏𓁒 “wḥm mswt” , sits in front 𓄂𓏏 “ḥ3.ṯ” of the other knob. On the lid are the cartouches 𓍲𓈖𓏌𓅱𓍶 “šnw” of: Ramesses II Throne Name Usermaatre-Setepenre (𓇳𓄊𓁧𓍉𓇳𓈖) ‘Mighty is the Justice of Re, Chosen of Re’. And his Great Royal Wife 𓇓𓈞𓏏𓅨𓂋𓏏 “ḥm.t-n(y)-sw-wr.ṯ”, Nefertari (𓏏𓅐𓄤𓏏𓇋𓂋𓏭𓈘𓏏) “nfr-ti-ri-mri.t-mwt” ‘Beautiful Companion, Beloved of Mut’. The purpose of the box is uncertain, but it was likely used for cosmetics. Freshly screenprinted and restocked! 🌿 Lamiarum Unguenta, meaning “witches’ ointment,” is a paste made primarily from psychoactive plants in a base of animal fat and used to aid in night flight. The unguent is applied topically and absorbed into the skin, allowing the psychoactive effects of the plants to induce a deep sleep in which astral projection may be achieved. In this trance-like state it is said witches would ride the sky alongside the goddess Diana or, more popularly theorized, fly through the night to meet at the Witches’ Sabbat. A few of the most consistent plant ingredients found in texts on the subject are Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum), Datura (Datura stramonium), Monkshood (Aconitum spp.), Belladonna (Atropa belladonna), Henbane (Hyoscyamous niger), Mandrake root (Mandragora officinalis), and Ergot (Claviceps purpurea). Remember that Medusa oil I mentioned last week? Now it’s an unguent. There’s just something about smearing a scented balm all over skin and I couldn’t resist binding it together with beeswax to make something decadent. That sticky ball of labdanum is in here and I added Dittany of Crete, honey, and poplar buds and other intoxicatingly aromatic herbs and resins to bring out the woody, resinous sweetness. It’s really, really damned good. Only made a few of these. In the shop update tonight.
