I watched Under the Microscope over the weekend and it was SO GOOD. It was so smartly written without feeling pedantic or pretentious. It’s amazing how it was still able to mix in humor with the horrors that the ML went through as he tried to navigate a corrupt system. All the characters also felt real and complex. Even the evil ones had moments where I felt like I could understand where they were coming from. One of the things the drama does so well is showing that multiple things can be true at once and that sometimes the road to hell is paved by good intentions. Like the first time they tried to enforce the land remeasurement policy. The drama makes it so clear why the farmers are upset at something that was enacted “for their benefit” and how out of touch the officials, and even Feng Baoyu, were about the commoners’ struggles. Anyway, to keep it short, 10/10, Zhang Ruoyun is amazing.
I’m gonna need Feng Baoyu and his sister to stop blabbing to Cheng Renqing. How many times are they going to give their plans away to him before learning he’s a sketchy mf?

The only old man in this drama so far who wants to do his job. I love when the camera pans to him as the other old men are talking and he's just side-eyeing everyone. I think they mentioned in the first ep that he was demoted from the Capital and if that's true then I'm guessing the reason he was demoted was because he was doing his job and someone or several people didn't like that.

These seasoned corrupt magistrates are interesting and fun to watch even though I want to throw a chair at them all the time.
And Jiamo's enraged expression here! I love how this drama is a bunch of greedy, lazy and corrupt old men vs. a man of mathematics with zero tolerance for bullshit when it comes to numbers. Debating and arguing with these old men doesn't gain him anything even if he wins his case. The Feng siblings joined him because the sister wanted fame for her brother, but Jiamo is doing it solely for his love for numbers and setting the ledgers straight.
Also a bit of spoiler, Jiamo proceeds to make them all speechless right after this scene by his very factual argument and ZRY's expressions are ON POINT during the whole scene.
