My alma mater has been the site of major flooding twice from two different hurricanes in less than two years. It was near the center of both storms’ path (Matthew in 2016 and Florence in 2018) and it has made the lives of many of its students and faculty much more difficult.
There are students and faculty whose homes are still underwater. Some of them never fully recovered from Matthew before Florence came. Others rebuilt only to lose everything all over again. The campus itself is in a flood-prone zone, with even regular thunderstorms posing a threat, but the amount of rain dropped by both hurricanes has completely washed out parts of campus days later. We thought Matthew would be the storm to end all storms until the surprise came a couple weeks ago. At least a quarter of its 7,000 students receive some sort of financial or donation assistance already, as serviced by the on campus resource center. But it looks like this one will put even more students at risk due to burdens of supporting their schooling as well as getting their lives back on track.
The link for donation is here [x]. As someone who lived through Matthew but watched Florence from a distance, I can feel the pain of the people who love this school. We’re strong and we can rebuild, but right now we need all the help we can get.
(P.S. it is a-okay if you cannot afford to donate. I wanted to get the story out there and let people know about my resilient school.)
