Warning: New Discord Scam
Recently, several friends of mine have dealt with this scam on Discord. I also found this same scam on Reddit so I'm sharing it. (Also while checking out Reddit, it seems as if there's also people stalking the r/scams subreddit and sending DMs to people with recovery scams. So if you ever post about your experience with getting scammed on Reddit, don't answer any DMs about someone who will tell you "I can help with that.")
It's a scam where someone (usually someone you're friends with) will send a message, telling you that they were recently scammed by someone who was impersonating you so they reported your account and the only way to get rid of it is to contact a staff member in you DMs.
There's another variation of this scam where someone will send you a message saying that they reported your account as fraud on accident and will tell you to go to Discord to talk it through it.
When it comes to the Discord scam, look at your account standing. You can find it by going to your settings by clicking the gear icon next to your name. You will automatically be sent to your user settings/my account. There, you just have to click on "standing" tab which is right next to the "security" tab (the one you should be on already).
Here's mine for an example.
If your account is marked as "all good" then it is all good and you shouldn't do anything to change it/you don't need to do contact anyone. Just move on.
I also will say, if you can, try to get into contact with the person who sent you this DM somewhere else outside of Discord to see if it's really them. There's a chance this person's account has been hacked.
If you proceed and talk to someone who is marked as official, keep your wits, especially if they start asking for your personal info. Discord will never ask for your security codes, passwords, bank info, etc. If they start to ask for this, take a breath, look at something that's not your screen for a few seconds, do a quick stretch, do a single jumping jack, just do something that will let your brain readjust for a moment before continuing.
Breaking that immersion and allowing yourself to process the words you're reading is so important to avoid getting scammed. Remind yourself that it might feel scary but you're not dealing with a quick time event. You don't need to press A at a specific time to avoid your account getting nuked. Allow yourself time to think.
If someone tries to tell you that they work with Discord, try to see if you can find them online before talking. Discord's LinkedIn is a good place to start and if that's not enough, consider searching something like: ""[person's name]" + discord". The quotations around [person's name] are important to put in the search bar because the quotations mean you're looking for that phrase/name specifically so the search engine will only pull up results that are from these sources.
But, if you're dealing with the "I reported your [not Discord account] but you can talk to an official on Discord" scam, remember, first take a breath. This person is sending you to a secondary location, which is never how it's done.
If you're really worried, send an email to the site you were alerted that you were marked on. Never go to a secondary location.
I'm also going to recommend telling your friends about this. Let them know about it and if you can, try to set up a system with each other to see if everything is legit. Check if your email has been leaked anywhere, I recommend using Have I Been Pwned as a good place to start.
Going forward, here's things I recommend to keep in mind if you ever run into a potential scam
Do not share your passwords
Never EVER share your password. An employee (not just on Discord but any site) will never ask for your password. They don't need it. Unless you're making an online payment/set up anything financially, you will also never need to share your government name, address, bank info, etc. If they ask for it, do not give it to them.
Often times these people will ask for money to help you out and here's the thing, they're lying. Even if they say "you'll receive the money back" they're lying, especially if it's an abhorrent price. They will LARP as officials, use official sounding language, etc to get you to drop your guard and be more willing to listen to them.
*I will say as a side note, I know some websites do need a small amount of money to process someone's identity but if a website is asking for money, just keep in mind that will only happen if you're planning to move money to begin with and it should NOT be costly. By that I mean $0.20 MAXIMUM. If you're not sure if the fees you're paying are accurate, try and search for this process online and see if you find anything. If you can't find anything, be suspicious and do not give it unless you can verify this.
Do not go to a secondary location
Yes, I know we're taught not to go to secondary locations in person but it works the same online.
If someone is trying to settle your issues with your tumblr, discord, deviantart, reddit account or anything else, settle it on said site. They will never deal with it on discord, that is completely unprofessional. If there is an issue with your account, email support from the official website and handle it there.
Most important: Do NOT blame yourself
It's not your fault. These people are bullies. They prey on your anxiety and fear which actually stops you from thinking properly. This is also why I'm really stressing the importance of breaking that immersion. I know it can be scary but if you ever feel unsafe, just take a breath. It's okay. You're okay.
If you were scammed, remember that it's not your fault. You can beat yourself up over what you didn't do all day long but that's not going to solve anything. You'll just drive yourself mad and make yourself miserable.
