I only recently discovered German cartoonist Uli Stein after finding this mug at a thrift shop.

His style is so distinctive; I’m certain I’ve seen his work before. His cartoon subjects are anthropomorphic rats and cats and dogs and he usually riffs on simple common interactions.

This mug made made me think of how absurd things are in America right now.

This week in Minneapolis we’ll hear closing arguments (and perhaps a verdict) in the Derek Chauvin trial while protests continue in Brooklyn Center over the murder of Daunte Wright by police.

All of THAT is happening as the entire world navigates a deadly pandemic while Americans make wearing masks and getting vaccines a political wedge.

It’s exhausting. This mug is vintage 80s or 90s, so it’s not a current critique of us Americans, but it seems about right. I wonder what he would have drawn today?

"I want to give people some fun, entertain them and give them nice moments in bad times or in good times," Stein said in an interview in 2009.

Uli Stein was 73 when he died unexpectedly in August 2020.
