"Willow Faerie"
MTG Homelands 1995 | Illus. Susan Van Camp
Sketches of Veldrane and Sengir
idk what it is but I just love Homelands. Not what happened with Serra, that sucks ass, but the rest of it.
Which plane is better?
Kamigawa
Ulgrotha
This is round 1 of Battle of the Planes. The other round 1 polls are up as well.
Making a case for Ulgrotha
After watching the preview panel that took place at MagicCon Barcelona, I am 100% certain that a return to Ulgrotha can be done. They said it with the previews of Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It's set on Ixalan. It's a return but it's not mechanically connected to previous Ixalan sets. The same can be done with Ulgrotha and Homelands. In fact, it has been done with the recent return to Kamigawa.
Listen, lore-wise it has been a millennium since the Homelands story. A thousand years and some change. A lot can change in 1,000+ years. You have factions. You have a vampire lord who left the plane with, at the time, no certainty of return. You have dwarves who had come to Ulgrotha from another plane. There's the minotaurs as well as the goblins led by the immortal Eron the Relentless. Green has the Faerie folk and the Autumn Willow, if she's survived to the present day. And you have humans following the church of Serra or getting by on their own. Do we believe the giant army of vampires Leshrac saw in 4500 means the conquest of Ulgrotha had been completed?
There is plenty of lore for Ulgrotha and the Homelands. The Homelands comic alone had a ton of lore in the story and an entire background spelled out in the back pages. A thousand years can make a lot of difference. New stories and new mechanics. It is possible especially now that planes-traveling is no longer restricted to Planeswalkers.
