Who’s up for a stressful summary of my last eight weeks? Great!
Get accepted to study in England. (This past April.) Hooray!
Need visa.
Go to fill out visa application.
Can’t fill out visa application til July.
It’s July! Fill out visa application (spending hundreds of dollars).
Wheel to library, spend a day gathering/printing out all of the documents,
Take two-hour bus to Buffalo for biometrics. (Pay $22 for bus tickets.)
Eat Dino BBQ.
Paper says I must mail biometrics in within five days.
The next day...
Go to UPS store in Staples; they don’t have return labels.
Go to actual UPS store in next town over; they don’t have return labels.
Go to the VFS website and buy $70 shipping label.
They can’t send me the labels; I have to print them out.
The next day...
Go to library. Library is closed. Go to college library. College library is closed. The next day would be Sunday so UPS is closed. Can’t wait. Go to...CVS. Upload photo of shipping label to CVS Photo. Order in front of me prints out 200 pages of photos that take an hour. Finally! My shipping label! In photo form! Like an actual glossy 5x7 print of my shipping label. Brother picks me up and we drive to UPS. Hand them package.
Victory!
Three weeks pass.
An email: You filled out the wrong Visa form. Denied.
It’s Friday. It’s the weekend. I can’t do anything.
A frighten.
Like in between all of this I actually flew halfway across the world to visit the college and got to meet my supervisor and meet my peers and I got to see the house I’ll be staying in. It’s gorgeous. And accessible. And everything I’ve ever wanted. And my visa was denied. What now?
Now repeat steps 2-7.
Repeat. Steps. Two. Through. Seven.
Don’t want to wait. Wheel a three-mile round-trip from the Buffalo Immigration Center to the nearest UPS store and back to Dino BBQ.
Pass a huge fire on the bus ride back home. A whole truck company was on fire. There was a giant plume of black smoke that you could see for miles. Very ominous. Didn’t have a good feeling.
Several days pass. It’s midnight. Get an email. At midnight. They received my application. Fantastic! They’ll email me soon with results. Excellent!
A day passes. No email. Another day passes. No email. Another day passes. No email. Another day---you get the point.
Meanwhile I had to pay $1700 for the NHS insurance and just because I was blowing money, why not pay an extra $250 to have the decision expedited because I genuinely thought it was worth it. Thanks for buying Normal, guys. Wish I could have spent the money on something more fun. So now I’m literally out thousands and my move-in date is rapidly approaching and I didn’t know what I would do if I was rejected again. I’m checking day and night because, again, they have no problem emailing me at midnight so no time is sacred. They could email me any time...must check emails at all times...
A weekend comes. Last week. Monday - Friday. Every day, every night, spent checking my emails, anticipating phone calls, wondering if I did something wrong, just wanting to hear something. It’s now September.
And now it’s this Monday. I’ve become more paranoid than Ryder and Alastor Moody combined. Also I live out in the country so there are, like, birds and mice and squirrels just randomly crashing into the sides of my house which does not help the nerves. And I have to deal with all of this on top of the personal drama and the everyday moments of my life.
No email on Monday. No email on Tuesday. No email on Wednesday (yesterday). Wake up this morning. Shaking. In pain. No email. 5:00 AM. Go downstairs. Write. Pass out at 9:30 AM. N O E M A I L. NONE. ZIP.
Wake up about twenty minutes later to loud banging. Hagrid? No. But someone is at the door and they want me to answer.
A UPS guy? PERRY THE UPS GUY?
Sleepily sign for package. My brother’s Cavetown tickets? No. It has my name on it. I recognize it. I paid for it. It’s the return label I had to pay for.
I’m just staring at this envelope. Shaking so hard I can hear my wheelchair rattling. Did they really return it? Did I mess up that badly?
Only one way to find out...
Open envelope...
IT’S MY VISA!
AND THAT’S THE STORY OF HOW I GOT MY VISA AND LOST MY SANITY!
I had a really exhausting day, so many emotions and so much anxiety. But my visa application is finally done ✔🙌
Now the horrible waiting game to see if its approved. The next 20 days are going to KILL me. If anyone has experience with visas or just wants to say something nice to me now would be the time 😅🥺
