I haven't seen anyone mention it yet but on my three-hundredth rewatch I finally noticed the crystal blazing red.

this is of course the point but what's so chilling about the believer (2001) is that the call is coming from inside the house. as in, daniel balint was raised jewish. he knows the torah by heart. he's studied it extensively. he knows all the philosophies and beliefs and values associated with judaism. and he hates it all. we don't even know why. i'm not sure HE knows why. he looked at all of it, everything judaism has to offer, and he turned against it, not because he didn't understand but because he hated it in spite of understanding. like he has the variables. he's set up the equation right. he's just getting an inexplicable answer when he does the math. he's doing 2+2 and getting 5.
it doesn't make sense. all the things that make judaism so wonderful - he talks about those facets! judaism isn't about belief, it's about doing things. there is no "being saved", there might not even be a God. fences around the torah. questioning the contradictions in kashrut and halakhic law. "You can have chicken with eggs but not milk - why?" is a question i have heard from my dear friend who is a jewish educator, and it's a great question and conversation topic!! and daniel is articulate, he is opinionated, he is argumentative, he should love the entire concept of the talmud. but he doesn't. he doesn't. and it doesn't make sense. he knows it and he hates it and he doesn't even know why he hates it. he can point to the contradictions in the torah as a reason to write the whole thing off, and yet when he points to the contradictions WITHIN antisemitic rhetoric ("do we hate jews because they push their way in where they don't belong or because they're clannish and keep to themselves? because they're tight with money or because they flash it around?" etc) somehow he can just handwave the dissonance with the least jewish answer: we hate jews just 'cause. there's no reason because a reason is something you can argue against and jews love nothing more than arguing. and daniel knows that because he is jewish.
