Jane Austen spent between £15-40 on clothing per year and she wasn't attending a London season and trying to pass as a member of the gentry/nobility. Some well cited articles I've found say that a gown cost between £1-8 depending on quality. Catherine Morland may have only brought £10 with her to Bath in Northanger Abbey, but she was only dressing herself and she was told to write home for more if she needed it.

We're supposed to believe that Kitty Talbot bought full wardrobes for both her and Cecily, and that she's been attending balls and operas and whatever else, some of which would require entrance fees, non-stop for weeks and she's only spent £8? And she's also sent money home TWICE, once to fix a roof, and she's still got money left over?
