my rose comes with a question, your random sentence will serve as the answer to đź‘€đź¤(can we play? xD)
Q: What did joinin?Obito think about during breakfast today?
ajhgfkgjh this is a hard one to answer because I have written scenes of Obito and Kakashi eating breakfast together at LEAST four different times, that I can remember, but in Abandon, Obito is not (yet!) a jounin, so I had to rule that one out, and in UATW, a couple the breakfast scenes that are closer to what is currently published are barely two lines strung together at the moment, so that's not very fun to share.
so instead I'm skipping ahead VERY far, and so this is not a mild spoilers warning, it's MAJOR spoilers for what I have planned for the ending of the series. on the surface, the scene is just Obito bringing back donuts after they've all had a long, loooong night, and Kakashi trying to figure out what jounin obito is thinking about during breakfast, but if you want to know more about the context, i'll put a bit more under the read-more in red text before we get to the actual snippet:
ok so this scene is of them sitting on an outdoor patio, and this is the first time they've seen each other in a long time, like a couple of years, and it's the first time that the two of them have talked and been alone together for a LONG time.
also spoiler alert that's so guessable based on it being a plot-device I use literally ALL the time, but Kakashi was very recently tortured and rescued right before this scene happened. actually the fact that he's even walking around or sitting upright in this scene is lowkey a medical miracle tbh, but if the plot dictates you getting out of bed to eat donuts with your best friend/life partner who has been avoiding you for years on end, then by god you'll get yourself up out of that hospital bed.

“Eat the damn donut already,” is what the old Obito would have said. Smashed it into Kakashi’s face mask when Kakashi wasn’t looking, if he thought it was taking Kakashi too long to remember to feed himself.
This Obito doesn’t do that.
Is there… any of Old Obito left?
Or — did I crush that part of him too?
Kakashi hung his head heavily.
The smell of the donuts is really nice. Feeling brave, Kakashi made the first move, reaching into the bag carefully, both because he was really hungry, and because he knew he wouldn’t get any more painkillers if he didn’t eat, and there was just enough sensation coming back into his back and his legs to make him very motivated to get more painkillers. “Did you get these from Miko-chan’s place?” he asked as he drew one out, cradling it gently between his shaking fingers.
Obito shrugged.
“They don’t usually sell them on weekends. It’s Sunday today, right?”
No answer except a slight turn of Obito’s head, something that could possibly be a nod or an indication of interest.
Or could just be a bounce of his head.
“Wonder if this is one of those friends-of-the-Hokage privilege things,” Kakashi mused, feeling foolish for talking about inane nonsense. “But if there’s donuts in it…”
“They said you were there for five and a half days,” Obito informed him suddenly. “And that you were tortured in front of the rest of the Root ANBU agents in order to send a message about compliance, and that it was excruciating.”
“Tenzo said?”
“Yeah. And there was testimony from Owl and Rat and Otter, too, and it’s expected there will be more.”
“Ah. Good, I guess,” Kakashi managed with a dry swallow, hurrying to take another sip of coffee.
Obito nodded. He still hadn’t looked over, so Kakashi prodded his arm once, just above the elbow.
“Take it,” he said when Obito just blinked at the donut Kakashi was extending out to him. “I know you like the sweet rice ones.”
“You like them too.” It sounded begrudging.
“And Minato, but he’ll live. We’ve both survived worse than a lack of favorite donut in the morning.”
We’ve survived, Obito. That’s what matters. It was bad, but we’re alive, and you’re here…
Obito looked away, didn’t make eye contact.
Is this… it this going to be an inroad? Is this progress, or is he going to bound out of here at any moment? Maybe cuss me out before he goes…?
“Anyway, I like the chocolate ones, too,” Kakashi continued, trying to keep his voice as light as possible.Â
“No you don’t.”
“I’ve sorta learned to like them,” Kakashi updated him. “Also, it really beats air and the taste of my own blood from biting my tongue, which is all I’ve had lately besides for the ramen last night.”
Obito snorted this time, it was definitely a snort. Not quite of amusement or sympathy, but something perhaps in between them.
The door is opening — maybe...?
Hopefully.Â
Possibly.Â
“Do you… want to hear about it?”
Obito’s eye widened, and then he looked down at him. Finally. In full. Kakashi’s heart beat faster and faster as the silent seconds slid by. Then Obito said,
“Are you sure you want to talk about it?”
Each word heavy and dark.
“Do you actually?”
A test.
Trust goes both ways. Gates and doors have to open both ways.
Leaning forward, Kakashi bit his lip, pushed his mask down into a bunch around his neck, pushed his non-donut-holding hand into his hair, scrubbing around as the true, genuine answer emerged from the depths of his being: “This time, um, well — this time, Obito, yes. I kind of do.”
A shuffling sound. Kakashi stared at the blank space between his feet and Obito’s, couldn’t quite bring himself to look up to trace its source.Â
(...what if he doesn't believe me, what if he doesn't forgive me, what if he’s leaving, what if he’s leaving, what if he's leaving—)
Until Obito prodded his arm, reaching into the donut bag with his other hand and extracting the one at the bottom, which Kakashi hadn’t seen before. Sweetened matcha frosting. Pale green. Passing it over to Kakashi.
“This’s the one I got for you. Hand me the stupid chocolate one, Minato-Sensei can have the sweet rice one.”
Kakashi smiled, tremulously. A surging mix of feelings that the old him would have tried to pack down, bury away, hide from sight but that wasn't who he was anymore, and so as he blinked away tears, a big blooming smile won out over them all.
