A spray gun can be used when painting a piece of set as an alternative to painting with a brush. It can also help to give the set different effects which will help make the set look more realistic.

Method  

1. Connect the spray gun you are using to an air compressor to provide the gun with air, which will allow it to spray the paint.

2. After the spray gun is connected to the compressor it is ready to be filled with paint. The paint I used was Rosco Super Saturated, which I watered down to the ratio 1:4 (1 part paint 4 part water). When the paint is mixed it can then be placed into the pot on top of the gun. Before you put it in you must first check that the pot is securely attached to the gun otherwise the paint will come out of the bottom of the pot. Once you have checked that you are ready to put the paint into the pot. When doing this you need to used a porous material that can be used as a sieve to remove all of the pigments from the paint to stop the guns nozzle being blocked by them. When the paint is in you must ensure the lid is securely attached to the top of the pot to stop the paint coming out the top. 

3. When the paint is in the pot you are ready to begin painting. When using the spray gun you have to pull back to trigger to make the paint come out. The trigger can be pushed back twice, the first time will only allow air through but when you push it back again the paint will be allowed through. I would suggest that before you start to pull the trigger back so that only the air out off the gun. Once you have the air coming out of the gun you can the push it back and allow the paint through. 

4. Once you have the paint coming through you can move the gun around how like to give the effect you require on the set. If you want what you are painting to be straight you should ensure that your arm does not arch as this will created obvious curved lines and ruin the effect you are looking for. If you want the paint to come out straight onto the surface you should walk from left to right with the gun held straight to make the paint lay straight on the piece of set you are painting. I would also suggest you use the trigger to control how much paint you want to come out of the nozzle. If you want the paint to look patchy then you should hold and release the trigger a little to make less paint come through the gun this should in theory give you a patchy effect. When spraying you must ensure that you are wearing a masked for health and safety reasons to prevent the paint fumes let of by the spray gun getting into your body and damaging it. 

When designing the set we must take into account the necessary health and safety measures that the theatre must abide by.

One example of this is the pier, because of the piers height and the fact that it can move, safety rails were added to the design to ensure the safety and well-being of any actors (and technicians) who may be on it at anytime.

Today we started work on designing and making the rough card model for the Beano set. 

To start with myself and Luke were given the task of making a permanent addition to the model box, which would be the dock. To do this Luke and I went over to the auditorium to measure out the width and depth of the dock so that we could make the model of it. To make the walls we chose to use foam board. I drew out the size of the walls on the foam board using a scale ruler and a set square (to ensure that I had rights angles) and I then handed it over to Luke who cut it out. It took a number of attempts for Luke to cut it out but we eventually had two walls. Whilst we had been doing this Tom had started work on the floor of the dock. He then cut it out and I started stick it together. After I attached the walls to the floor and then I realised  hat the floor was wrong because the floor of the dock was two far in front of the walls so the floor had to be re-done. 

After we had done this we moved on to making rough card models of the set for the Beano. We started by going through the different parts of the set that we needed to make. After we had done this we assigned ourselves to the different parts of the set. Jake and I assigned ourselves to work on designing the Pier and Pavilion which would stand in the dock. We started by going to the auditorium to workout the size we wanted the pier to me and how far on stage we wanted the pier to be. When we returned to design I had to go and tour some perspective students around the theatre before they had their interview with Alan about joining the course next year. When I returned to the design room Jake and I decided that the Pavilion would be 8' x 16' and 16' tall and its base would be 8' of the ground. We also decided that the pier would be made out of the gantries we had used in the Christmas show and when it was full on stage (because it had to be able to be off stage when the show began) it would come on stage about 5'. We also decided that it would be 2 m of the ground, as this this would give enough clearance and allow actors to walk underneath. 

Strengths 

I think that Jake and I have a concrete idea of the measurements of the pier and the pavilion as well as an idea about how it looks. I also think we work well as a team because we take into account each others idea and discuss ways of overcoming flaws. 

Weakness 

I think I need to recap measuring with a scale ruler because some of my measurements were off today when I was making the dock.
