I’m still really mad that they canceled Tyrant just when it looked like they were actually going to give Sammy a storyline again.
I just finished watching Tyrant and it’s a good show but there are a lot of things that are wrong with it as well? (might be some spoilers)
1. The biggest really: the lead character is a white man playing a middle eastern man. This is called white washing. And if this is not bad enough, they make him out to be the “hero” of the show. So, the white man saves the day. (Atleast in s1/2)
2. This might be a small thing, but when they pray they’re not doing it right. Like the ending of the salaat (the prayer) is not done right or when they’re in the middle of praying and someone interrupts them and then they immediately stop. Like this is not the way: you can’t break your salaat when someone walks into a room?
3. THE LANGUAGE. This is supposed to be an Arabic country, yet everyone speaks English? This is so frustrating to watch and adding an accent does not make it better. If you’re going to potray an Arabic country on screen: let them speak Arabic.
4. Unnecessary love triangles: Bassam/Molly/Daliyah. This was SO dumb and so extremely unnecessary. Cheating is NOT okay in any way? And I’m sick and tired of shows pretending that just because you’re in love, it is?
5. When Bassam wanted to have a muslim funeral (I don’t know how to call it) in a muslim country and Molly responded: “Emma wasn’t a muslim, the man who killed her was”. This line was so messed up and maybe it was supposed to be hurtful and showing us that this is the way white people think but it was really ignorant. She implied that just because the man who killed her daughter happened to be muslim, all muslims are bad or something. Like what the hell? The father of Emma was muslim as well? (atleast he tried to be again)
Overall it does potray Islam as a peaceful religion (as it is) and it brings a lot of important issues on the agenda. Like what is happening in Syria and ISIS and it doesn’t belittle the issues that are happening right now. It can be painful to watch at times and it even hurts more knowing that Tyrant is just a show but these things (the bombing, the gas attacks, the tyrancy) are happening right now for real. It’s important to show people this and I have never seen a show like it!
They sent you to squeeze my heart, didn’t they?
