The funniest thing about Pope Leo’s big AI encyclical is not that people are calling it a “42,000‑word manifesto declaring war on AI.”

It’s that anti‑AI Twitter read the intro, saw “Tower of Babel,” and immediately decided this was finally about them.

If you actually look at what he’s doing, the document is painfully clear:

it’s not a hit piece on people who use ChatGPT, it’s a moral tantrum about corporate power, autonomous weapons, and labor exploitation dressed up in biblical cosplay.

He talks about AI needing to be “disarmed” because of autonomous killing systems and AI‑driven warfare, not because someone generated fanart.

He goes after monopolies, data extraction, exploitative annotation labor, and the fact that a handful of companies can quietly rewire politics, work, and information flows.

He keeps coming back to law, regulation, oversight, human responsibility — the boring machinery of governance, not pitchforks for “AI sinners.”

In other words: his enemy in that text is AI as infrastructure of domination, not you writing emails faster.

Of course, none of that will stop the anti‑AI crowd.

They don’t need the argument, they just need the aesthetic: “The Pope says Babel, we are so back.”

They will happily ignore the paragraphs about corporate accountability and worker protection, pat each other on the back, and keep posting “the Pope declared war on AI users” like they’ve just received a papal indulgence for being Luddites.

If they really want to claim him as their champion, they should at least try quoting the parts where he demands binding regulation for tech giants and protections for workers.
