If anyone knows how Twinery works and how to put background music and images please message me I need help it's for a final due in 36 hours as of posting
Apologies if you would rather not say (I won't be offended if you ignore me), but could you tell us what coding editor you use? I'm trying to weigh my options and see what feels best, and I really like the UI on yours. :')
Hi nony! No of course I'll say, no prablem, the program I use is a godsend! It is so intuitive and has syntax highlighting and automatic indents, built in testing, gah, itās amazing. If you are writing a choicescript game I canāt recommend it enough. It's called the Choicescript IDE, or CSIDE.Ā
Read about it here.Ā (Link takes you to the choicescript website where you can download it, but I know that the dev is on the COG forums answering questions from time to time too!)
Also, if you ever need to visualize your plot; using twines online editor is amazing, and letās you experiment with branching without writing tons of text. Check it out.
Hope this helps. :>
The road so far...
Scripting out a rough draft for the beginning of the otome game in twinery. Iām hoping to have the beginningĀ ādoneā for the dev team to play and get a feel for the gameās tone. (When I assemble the team. This weekend, I promise.)
This is the first page, where Iām setting up the playerās stats. As you can see, Orion takes to the MC right away, whereas Evil Artemis... heh.
Iām teaching myself the code language as I go, and itās fascinating. If anyone else uses twinery and knows the Harlowe language, Iād love to pick your brain.

hey so how the hell do i code in twine, asking for a frenemy (itās me iām the frenemy)
but seriously, iām honestly considering just posting the game barebones and learning to code to make it look better later on. iām one of those people that if i donāt get something first try, i feel like i canāt ever get it, so being bad at computers and wanting to create games is a dastardly combination for me.
iāve also considered moving to choicescript, although thereās still some coding involved there, and no matter what medium i work in, i can never seem to get anything to work.
what do yāall recommend? iām a first time programmer and coder, so iām genuinely having a rough time right now lol
Wayfarer Update 2020-12-31
Hello friends!
Sliding in here with the last update of the year (Iām in the land of Pacific Standard Time, soĀ I still have a while left before 2020 disappears forever).Ā
Chapter 1 Updates
Yesterday I hit the +50k mark for new content! All branches of the end-of-chapter fight sequence are done. I still have 3 ending scenes to write before I can start editing and coding, but the update is getting closer to being finished.Ā
I mentioned this in my last dev log, but the coming update is going to be a pretty large one. Aside from the new story content, there will be:
Updates to the combat system, which includes a special event if you happen to get injured twice in a combat scenario (it may be tempting to reload and try a different path or try to get better dice rolls, but I do hope players will follow through on the events as they pan out for you!)
Improved journal page, which aside from dividing out into different sections for each section, also includes a help page that explains some of the gameās mechanics
Appearance customization - yes I know I said I wasnāt going to do this because I donāt like setting variables Iām not going to use regularly, but I hit a part where I really wanted to know what the MCās height was and whether they had hair or not and... well... here we are. There will be some interesting things happening with tattoo and scar selection, too (depending on how you play, there is the opportunity for your MC to gain more scars throughout their journey)
Nickname customization - Aeran calls the MC by a diminutive of their given name and there will be an opportunity to set this after the first Exploration page. If you selected one of the default names, a diminutive will be given (you can change it if you want). If youāre playing with a custom name, you can create your own. Because of game mechanics, you wonāt be able to skip this.Ā
A records counter which keeps track of fun things, like how many skill checks you pass (or fail) and how many times your MC gets knocked unconscious so you can be haunted by your successes and failures
Your first look at the post-chapter level up screen, where youāll have a chance to improve your skills and, depending on your choices, unlock Perks.Ā
Just a gentle reminder that Wayfarerās content is rated Mature and includes graphic depictions of violence, explicit language and drug and alcohol use (I will be updating the content warnings to include the last one).Ā
General Updates
Januaryās going to be a busy month. The next update is at the top of the priority list, but weāve got the Patreon and Discord coming, too. Once all of that drops, Iāll likely be taking a break because Iāve been working non-stop since November and Iām starting to feel a little burned out.Ā
@parkerlynā is starting an informal IF-oriented NaNoWriMo in January where the goal is to focus on personal goals rather than word count. You can check out her post here if interested! Iām not sure to what capacity I will be participating, but, fingers crossed, Iāll be starting the Route B branch of Chapter 1 once the update goes out.Ā
Happy New Year, friends. Donāt want to jinx anything, so Iāll leave it at that--see you in 2021!
I launched my first interactive fiction project, Embolden, last Friday! You get to follow Jenny: a 20-something trying to curb her time-travelling habits and accepting her past. I made it as a means to introduce the concept of reframing through storytelling. I have never written so much before (plus the multiple endings ohmygOd) and Iād love to know what you guys think :) Thereās a feedback form when you click an image at the end of the game but you can also fill it up here.
