ANTONIA PERSEPHONE SWAN is a normal 16-year-old girl.

Or at least that’s what she thought… School had only been back in session for a few weeks when she got the news that her half-sister, Bella, was returning to Forks.

Great....They never really got along, they were just too different. Too awkward, too distant, too… everything.

Charlie and Renée divorced a few months after Bella was born. Bella and Renée left for California, leaving Charlie alone in Forks. Just a few months later, he met Daphne, Persephone’s mother, when she came into the police station to report a crime. Some strange man had been following her since she moved to town. Charlie gave her his number “in case she ever felt unsafe,” which was honestly the smoothest he’s ever been in his life.

Their connection grew quickly, turning into something steady and real long before either of them expected it. Persephone came into their lives not long after, the final piece that made them a family. When she was two, she toddled down the aisle at her parents’ wedding, clutching Daphne’s hand and laughing the entire time.

Everything was perfect… until her sixth birthday. A huge storm was rolling in. Daphne had just come home from errands, Charlie was on the couch playing with Persephone, and the house was warm and loud and safe, until the storm hit. Suddenly the wind started howling against the windows, Daphne suddenly froze, eyes fixed on the shadow of a man standing at the edge of the yard. The same man who had followed her years ago. The one she thought she’d escaped. She whispered Charlie’s name, told him to stay inside, and stepped out into the rain before he could stop her… driven by fear, instinct, and the desperate need to keep her family safe. She never came back.

Years later, the only things Persephone has left of her mother are a necklace with a strange symbol carved into it and a small box labeled Do Not Open Until Your 17th Birthday.

What is even in there? A letter? Books? It does feel like books. Clothes? Honestly, she’s scared to find out.

With Bella’s return, Persephone’s whole world flips on its head. She’d met Bella a few times before, but they’d never been close. Now She has to show her around Forks, hang out with her, and, apparently, protect her from that one weirdo Edward who keeps staring at Bella like she’s a particularly interesting science experiment. Yikes!
