Hi! I've been reading a lot of Twelve x Rose fics lately and a random thought made me chuckle and thought I'd share it with you. I was thinking, what if it had been Twelve to save Rose from the Autons in the basement? I couldn't help but picture Twelve running like a penguin with his ass on fire beside Rose, as they're chased by a horde of shop window dummies! I loved it so much I just started laughing and had to share it with someone and you were the first one I thought of. I'm not sure if this has ever been done before, I haven't seen a fic of it at least, but now I can't get that thought out of my head!
nonny, sorry it took me ages to reply but this is such a funny visual akdhakdj?? you can just see that old man booking it in his beautiful penguinish way, with coattails flapping and everything, holding rose's hand. i feel like the second they stumbled into the elevator, she'd go, "what was that?"
"the autons? not to worry, they'reā"
"no, not those, the running! theā" and then she'd pantomime his waddle-run. "like you'll implode if your arms touch your sides!"
"ergonomics."
i just love them so much. my sillies š thanks for this ask, it really brightened my morning today

Iāve been reading some twelverose and had to think back on a scene, at the very beginning of season 10, when he was guarding the vault at that university. You know the one where the camera pans across his office desk and we see a photo of Susan and River?
I remember how people made edits of Roseās photo on his desk and all, and while it did annoy me (and others) that Rose ā arguably a very important person to the Doctor, considering the positive impact on him, post-Time War ā was missing, back then, I think now, I see her absence differently.
Roseās presence post-Doomsday/Tentoo is most felt with her absence. The Doctor (from 11 onwards) doesnāt talk about her and we get less references[1] but, perhaps inadvertently, the absence of a mention or reference becomes the reference itself.
The Doctor carries his deepest grief and feelings within himself. He almost never mentions, displays or shows any reminders because it a) the reminders hurt and b) it feels way too vulnerable to have people see he has experienced loss and pain. That he cares and that it breaks his hearts.
So, I think the specific absence of Rose has more to do with the fact that the Doctor carries her reminder (her presence) everywhere he goes. He doesnāt need a physical object (though it happens on occasion)[2] because Rose had such an impact on him that, in the quiet moments, whenever he sees or hears something that reminds him of her, he pauses for a moment; he remembers and then he tucks it away again. Itās quiet, itās reflective and itās private.
Linda Nochlin[3] once said the absence in a painting is as much or even more revealing than the presence of people or objects.
"[ā¦] we are haunted by certain absences in the painting. [ā¦] once we become aware of them, they begin to function as presences, in fact, as signs of a certain kind of conceptual deprivation." (Nochlin, The Imaginary Orient, 1983, p.35.)
Itās only when you look at whatās missing youāre able to see the bigger picture. Applying this to the absence of Rose while highlighting the presence of others (here River and Susan) it becomes clear that ā bearing in mind the Doctor as the private/closed off person he is ā sheās as present as ever.
- š¦
(Yes, I love rose, sue me lol. It goes without saying that the presence of absence can be applied to other companions but it just hits different with rose u know?)
Further notes:
[1] Which isnāt to say none: Like Elevenās mention about being her tutor, once, the glass rose and the rose doll, Kazranās question about one last day with oneās beloved, oh and of course the TARDIS voice interface. And with Twelve itās the yellow roses in his pilot ep and the mention of wanting to share a (long) life with another person in that ep with Lady Me ā "That happens, I believe".
[2] Have you noticed that Roseās references are almost never an image of herself or a direct verbal mention? Itās rather visual or verbal associations/implications, so like either somebody says something or a situation arises that parallels the Doctor and Roseās experiences or we have representative objects (glass rose, doll, actual roses) that clue us in.
[3] The same art historian btw, who wrote the famous essay "why have there been no great woman artists?", an essay I might add that is still shockingly relevant, and she published it in the 70s.

Could you share something from/about Having Affairs (with each other) please?
Oh, you picked the sad, angsty one lol.
This one is still kinda rough but in my head it's kind of a darker mirror of season 2, where their codependence can wind up hurting other people.
It's roughly an AU of the last couple of 12 episodes where he winds up losing the TARDIS but not regenerating; he falls to a parallel earth instead. Lost and mournful of what happened with Bill, Missy, the TARDIS, Clara, and River, he goes to Rose, even knowing he's ruining her "happily ever after" by being there because he feels utterly broken. Rose knows he needs her, and has never lost her incredible sense of compassion, and she holds him close and well... things happen. At first they both justify it as "one time only" but...its not. He's stuck there. She's his only companion, and the only one he feels he can trust himself around after all the others basically all got killed on his watch.
And they have never been just friends.
What Rose is cheating on is Tentwo (and she hates herself for it); what 12 is cheating on is basically turning his back on everything he was (and arguably, River too; he knows she might be alive here but he won't look for her in this universe). He doesn't want to be the Doctor anymore, and he doesn't want to regenerate into someone else (though it gets progressively harder for him to avoid). I'm not entirely sure how it ends -- but I know one of the later scenes will be Tentwo basically finding incontrovertible proof of their affair in front of her and...choosing to ignore it, even if it hurts him pretty badly. This one is just smutty angst all the way through.
I am a bit nervous about its reception in fandom but I do plan on putting a bunch of TW tags on it. And I do not think you can say it will be a positive portrayal of cheating, lol.
(But I'll write positive 12/Rose later if there's any niche audience out there for that).
Here's a bit of their first kiss/make-out that happens point five minutes after they meet again lol:
His face is different; more angular.Ā SharpĀ is how she'd describe this one; looks like he could cut you if he looked at you funny. His mannerisms are slightly different too; more formal. Less...human.Ā
But the old, tired eyes are the same.Ā
"Hello," he says. Voice is different too; Scottish. She smiles. "I'm..." He starts, then fades away.Ā
"Hi," she says. "I know. I always know you," she insists, and she isn't certain that its true, but she believes it enough and its certainly true here.Ā
And he reacts to that, oh does he ever react to that. His eyes burn with an intensity that is all her first doctor, all big ears and crystal-blue eyes she could lose herself in, and her heart hurts with the sheer nostalgia of it. "Rose Tyler," this Doctor says, and then he leans forward.
And then he kisses her.Ā
He kisses her, tenderly, truly, deeply; the way she has always dreamed he would when she was younger and he was, well, still ancient in comparison. The daydreams she had when they were two people instead of three. Kisses her hard enough to push her into her own doorway, and then against her own foyer's wall, kissing her so hard she hears the soft puff of air as his respiratory bypass kicks in, and only after that happens do they separate.Ā
"I love you," he gasps. And his eyes are horrific. He is desperate to believe in -- something. Anything. His eyes are so heavy it looks like the universe is hanging from them and it scares her far more than anything that he has ever done before. She knows what he is not saying: that he is broken, that he has gone so far in some way or another that he thinks he has no way back.
He had to blow up a sun to say goodbye once, and she'd only gotten a hologram image of him. She cannot imagine what he's done to cross that divide a second time. His mouth twitches, as if he can read her thoughts, and maybe he can. But it doesn't matter; if he is here, she will tell him what he needs to hear.
She has always fixed him. This will be no different.Ā
"Doctor..." She says, and she puts her hand over his temple, gently fingering it. She is not psychic, but she knows from the metacrisis that time lords find this soothing. He shudders, but his eyes stay on her.
"IĀ loveĀ you," he whispers, and she knows it must cost him so much to say it, because he's never tried to say it before and here he is, saying it. Twice even.Ā
"I love you, too," she says, because it is the truth. Because she has always loved him, even if she loves the human doctor that he left her with, too. Complicated. They are always complicated. How could they be anything but? He wants to ask how he's been, but she can tell he feels like shit, so she doesn't. She just looks at him.
Ā He pulls back.Ā
His eyes look at her, then slide to the picture frame next to her head, and she catches the wince that crosses his face as he takes in the image that's framed on the wall:Ā her and his human counterpart, shared rings on their fingers, shared smiles on their faces. She sees, for one aching second, all the pain that comes with the Metacrisis getting the life that the Doctor himself might want to have lived. Then the way he looks back, and she realizes with a soft shudder that it doesn't matter to him, that he loves her enough to look past it.
His hand slides up to her cheek and he looks at her; wordless, but somehow meaning everything. She closes her eyes; his hand is cold at one point, a ring on his finger. She grabs it with her hand; he shakes his head.Ā
And she decides, in one horrible moment, that she loves him enough that she's willing to look past it as well.Ā
And then his lips touch hers again without a word. She leans into it; is it even cheating, if this man is more than half the man your husband is? She does not know. She is not sure if it even matters; they were together before the Metacrisis and she suspects a part of her and the doctor will always be together, because for twenty minutes Rose Tyler was a Goddess for all intents and purposes and she knows she would want that to be the way it would be; her doctor, her lover, always and forever.Ā
And in a way,Ā sheĀ has her forever. She has the metacrisis Theta. A man who lives as she does, sleeps and eats as she does, will age and join her in the dirt in an unspecified number of years. She has her happy ending.Ā
But this DoctorĀ has no Rose holding his hand and he needs one, so she grabs his hand and squeezes it. That is who they are. Always a hand given and one taken, always running hand in hand despite all the time and space between them. They never should have worked.
But they always do.Ā
His face moves towards her with a velocity that almost stuns her; his forehead rests against hers and they are both breathing hard.Ā
"Still?" He asks. There is no need to ask what he is referring to.Ā
"Still," she says. She swallows. Guilt churns in her like a vice. Is she doing harm, to give him this? He wants it so badly, needs -- something. He's lost something, she thinks. Something that's scared him to the core. "Always," she says, and in that word there is a promise: I will always be yours, Theta Sigma.Ā
