Imagine you and Sherlock are married but you get stabbed.
------- Imagine -------
“Well go on Sherlock, look deep into those big, beautiful eyes…and lie to her. Tell her everything is going to be ok.” The villain behind his new bride sneered and laughed at his own words clearly amused at the situation. They both were just out of reach for him to physically protect you, and he knew you knew it as well. Sherlock gave you a brief once over, not wanting to get distracted but unable to stop his instincts from having him check every aspect of your being.
He could tell from that brief glance alone that you had already been put through hell. Your once immaculate hair that had been done up for your wedding was hanging limp and frazzled around your face, parts clearly pulled and torn. Your eyes were red and swollen with tears and your cheeks were red and already blackening with forming bruises. As his eyes too in your once vory dress covered in mud, bood, and something dark and oily Sherlock couldn’t fight the angry tears forming in his eyes.
For your part you could feel the knife the man steadily held against your back to keep you from doing anything drastic. You watched your husband, that word so new, only but a few hours old, made your head spin as the events of the day made your knees quiver. You had already been stressed and tired and when the attack had happened you were wholly unprepared. You could only watch as Sherlock, your husband, the most brilliant man you knew had tears form in his eyes and pain seer his features as he murmured, “Don’t worry (Y/N), everything is going to be ok.”
You saw the lie in is eyes only seconds before your registered that the slight pressure from the knife had become a searing pain and your body fell forward as if all the strength had left you. You fell into Sherlock’s arms as he yelled for someone and you swore your hazy gaze registered Lestrade running by and the callused fingers of John join Sherlock’s on your back. You looked up at Sherlock from where he held you, not even sure when you had both lowered to the ground, but as the black and red spots danced in your vision you looked into his pale eyes and said the only words that came to mind. “Don’t worry Sherlock. Everything will be ok.”

After the funeral, Robert decided to walk home instead of taking the carriage. While the rain was unpleasant, he needed to clear his thoughts.
It was too quiet. Usually when he would walk past the farms, he'd hear the braying of cattle and the screeching of chickens and goats, often times he'd also hear the serfs' children playing in the fields. But right now, there was nothing.
A part of him felt like it was fitting. But maybe it would have done him good to see that life goes on?
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps behind him. He turned to see who it was and what they could possibly need. . .
. . . Only to be hit square in the face.
Robert was not a poor fighter, but he hadn't been expecting it and his grief made him weak. He swore he even saw stars. He knew crime was getting worse, but who in their right mind would attack a prince? Suppose the same people who would poison a king.
He hit the ground with a sickening thud. He knew he was injured but he didn't know how badly, especially since he was busy trying to escape from the man who was now on top of him.
"Hush now, little prince. I just need you to go to sleep."
As the blows continued, Robert tried his best to shield himself - but he was caught truly off guard and could not get the upper-hand.
There was a part of him that wanted to laugh at the irony. Outside of the Watcher's symbol around his neck and the very crown on his head, he had nothing of value on him. Everything of value was given to the church in exchange for prayers for his daughter.
Luckily for him, after he lost consciousness? The bandit left him - probably realizing just how much danger he put himself in for little to no reward.
Macaque has carried a number of scars from his past. Both mental and physical, and it's holding him back on feeling…'normal' among the group. All of it going back to one golden monkey. It might help if they could just talk…or if Macaque could open up.

Macaque would like to say, at one point, he wasn’t so broken. When he was younger. When it was just him and Wukong going through the day merely eating, sleeping, and playing pranks. It was such a simpler time. Just the two of them, doing what they wanted, without a care.
Wukong saying before the end of each day that they’d always be together. Side by side.
No matter what.
Then Wukong disappeared for over 500 years. Macaque left to search and wonder what had happened to his friend. Asking who he could for any information about the golden monkey. Banned from the Celestial Realm so he couldn’t search there. Macaque only left assume, from the bits of information he could collect, that Wukong was not there. Which was a small comfort as he still couldn’t find the golden monkey.
Macaque was close to giving up when he finally found his missing partner. Up and about, smiling, in new robes of yellow, blues, and reds. A red staff with golden double ends in hand. Looking absolutely fine.
The Shadow Warrior felt his heart explode with happiness and relief. Shoulders sagging as he laughs softly, eventually pushing off the tree he’d been leaning on and rushing forward. Smiling, only thinking about how he wanted to embrace the other in the tightest hug he could muster. Wanting to hear that warm laughter again. Already planning on where they could go-
Macaque speed and thoughts came to a harsh stop. Quickly hiding behind a tree, eyes now wide with fear.
Wukong had turned, hearing someone else call out his name. Beaming as a small group slowly appeared over the hill. A human, dressed in heavy robes and carrying a golden staff, was traveling on the back of a white horse. They were the one who called out Wukong’s name, as the golden monkey called back with a ‘Yes Master?’ to the human in response. On one side stood a pig demon, a rake weighing on one shoulder while casting an untrusting glare on Wukong. The other side stood a water demon, built strong and sturdy, with an air of that he was not to be crossed.
Macaque was confused as he watched the interactions. It was strange, because Wukong was the only person who seemed eager to be there. The rest were…quiet. Uncaring. Indifferent. The pig demon even looked angry as Wukong continued to talk. Why was the golden monkey with these people if they seem so untrusting of him?
Another sucker punch to his emotions came when the human reached down to place a hand on Wukong’s head. The golden monkey’s smile seemed to grow wider, tail swaying happily. Macaque held back a pained sound, clawing deeply into the bark of the tree he was hiding behind, heart hurting. He knew that smile. That was his smile. The one Wukong gave as they were chasing each other. When they pulled off a successful prank. When they were relaxing at the end of the day and Macaque was resting against the other.
That was his smile.
Who was this human to think they deserved such a sight? Who were any of these…lowly mortals that seemed uncaring of the wonderful individual that was traveling with them? Was Wukong with these people willingly?
Why…was Wukong here and not with Macaque? Did he not know how much pain the other had put him through? Was he not worth searching for, the way that Macaque had desperately looked for Wukong?
The Shadow Warrior hid further behind the tree, unseen by the passing party. As they started to disappear, Macaque made a quick decision. He’d just found Wukong. He wasn’t going to lose him this soon, this easily. So he slipped into the shadows and followed as close as he dared.
Macaque was able to learn a lot about the situation as he stalked the small group. Wukong was only there because the human (a monk apparently) had freed the golden monkey from some sort of prison. Trapped under a mountain for 500 years, the pig demon liked to apparently tease Wukong about. It took everything to not just tear that demon apart for sounding so casual of an unfair punishment. But also learned that this little pilgrimage was supposed to be part of Wukong’s redemption.
It took everything to not just kill the monk the first time Macaque saw Wukong being punished. The golden monkey had handed a demon’s end that dared to cross their path. The monk was apparently unthankful for how Wukong had just saved the ungrateful mortals' life. Macaque was only able to watch, tears falling, as his -lover- friend fell to the ground in clear pain. Clutching his head in pain as the crown adorning his head glowing brightly as the monk mumbled something. It all only lasted a minute, but it seemed like the longest minute Macaque had to endure.
Then, stomach dropping in shock and fear, Wukong got up and knelt before the monk and apologized for his actions. Macaque felt the bubble of anger fester in his stomach, glaring darkly at the human who caused pain and suffering to the being he -loved- cared about. The human accepted the apology as if he was being merciful! As if this…this torture was normal!
He’d never wanted to snap someone’s neck so badly before.
Macaque decided he’d been hiding for too long. He needed to act and act now if he wanted to get Wukong away from here as fast as possible. Berating himself for not making a move sooner than now. Macaque should have gotten Wukong out of there the moment he realized the other party members didn’t care about the golden monkey.
It was night before Macaque approached the party. Well, ‘approach’ was more like making a noise to draw Wukong away from the camp. Remaining in the shadows as he watched Wukong’s eyes surveyed the area, staff out and ready to strike.
“Wukong?” Macaque quietly called out, emerging from the shadows.
The golden monkey’s face changed from a glare, to confusion, to absolute adoration. “Macaque! My Macaque!”
The Shadow Warrior couldn’t help but laugh as he was lifted up and pulled into a tight hug. Wrapping his own arms around Wukong as he nuzzled into the other’s neck. Finding comfort in the warmth and smell of peaches. “H-Hey Peaches, where have you been? Been looking everywhere for you…”
“Oh, it’s been so crazy! You remember that big party we had in the Celestial Realm?”
“I remember trashing the place, but go on.”
Wukong laughed weakly as he pulled away slightly. Cupping Macaque’s face gently, who just melted into the touch. “Well, the deities were not exactly happy. I was punished, put under a mountain for 500 years… I thought I was going to rot away…”
Macaque frowned, not liking how sorrowful Wukong sounded. Giving a small chirp before pressing their foreheads together. “I looked. I looked everywhere for you, I did! I just…I couldn’t…”
“I think the Gods made it so I couldn’t be found…”
“Then how did you meet up with…you know.” Macaque nodded back to the fire.
“Oh! The Great Monk was able to free me during his travels! Said I would be better serving out my punishment would be better if it was to protect and not fester. Deeming that action would show improvement over mere stagnant punishment.”
“That…is unfair. You’ve already been trapped for 500 years.”
Wukong looked away slightly. “Macaque…what we did, what I did, was not okay. This is needed for me to find forgiveness.”
“By being punished when you do your job?” Macaque growled darkly, “By being torture through learning because you defened your party? By clearly being ignored and uncared about by party members who don’t see you as an equal?”
“Yes, if it means I can become a better person.”
The Shadow Warrior shook his head. “Wukong, this isn’t right, you have to see this. You’re just a tool for them to use, I don’t think they care about you. It’s all just a means to an end.”
“Macaque-”
“Why didn’t you find me?”
“I-I had to follow them-”
“You didn’t, you could have fled the moment you were out of the mountain.”
“...My crown-”
“You mean you leash? Something to keep you ‘in line’ because you’re still seen as a danger?”
“Macaque, I was a terror!” Wukong tried to argue, “What I did in my past is something I regret and want to correct it as best I can. Being trapped under that mountain made me think about my actions and I…I hated who I was.”
“Then your punishment was enough if you recognize the faults and this is just torture. Please Wukong, let’s just leave. We can go and they won’t find you.”
The golden monkey shook his head. “I can’t…”
“Yes you can! We can just…walk away. I’m right here, with you, and we can go back to it just being us.” Macaque pleaded desperately, cupping Wukong’s face gently, who was still looking away. “Please? …Please I miss you and I hate seeing you like this. You deserve better…”
Wukong blink, realization dawned on him as he finally looked up and finally looked to Macaque. But it wasn’t with a warm smile or a nod of agreement. It was a harsh glare. “Have you…been spying on me?”
“...I just found you, I wasn’t about to-” Macaque was pushed away, eyes wide in surprise. “Wukong-”
“You can’t just- Why are you following me?”
“I- What? Wukong, I’m trying to get you out of here.”
“No, I’m not leaving. I need to stay here and I’m going to stay here. You’re not changing my mind.”
“Wukong-”
“Go home Macaque… You can’t be here.”
The warmth he’d clung to, the sweet smell of peaches, the weight of comfort he’d longed for disappeared once again. Macaque left in the cold darkness. Only able to watch as Wukong turned and walked back to the fire. Not looking back once.
That…was the first crack.
Macaque let out a heavy gasp of air, feeling pain emitting from his chest, a hand clenched over it. His mind was racing, so completely confused. Why didn’t Wukong take the chance? Why would he willingly stay with these people? Why…Why didn’t Wukong want to be with him?
Sorrow turned to anger quickly. But not anger towards Wukong, but to the rest of the party. They must have tainted the golden monkey’s mind, making him think this was normal. That it was okay to be the butt of the joke and used like some common tool. Well, Macaque wouldn’t stand for it. He needed to make them pay. If torture was a proper form of punishment, then he’d be happy to oblige.
The problem was…how was he supposed to do that?
He eventually realized that the most he could do was tease. Small little pranks that were more annoying than anything. But it caused him glee whenever someone from the party complained. Shrinking further into the shadows whenever Wukong would peer around with narrowed eyes. Of course Wukong knew it was Macaque. But unless he was found, Macaque didn’t care how angry the other was. This was his punishment to deliver.
It all reached a point where the pig demon cornered Wukong and demanded the monkey take care of the ‘issue’.
“What do you expect me to do about it? Maybe you’re just clumsy.” Wukong casually commented. Macaque silently giggled from the shadows, knowing that Wukong knew it was him. But clearly didn’t want to announce that an old friend was stalking the group.
“I’m not. There have been too many issues to just be normal and you know it,” the pig demon growled darkly, “It’s a demon messing with us and I want it gone. Do your job, take care of this.”
Macaque felt his fur flare in anger as he glared at the demon. How dare he talk to Wukong like some kind of lap dog. A sentiment the golden monkey seemed to share. “You don’t get to ‘command’ me, piglet. If there was an actual issue, I would take care of it. But there isn’t one so just suck it up.”
The pig demon growled and crossed his arms. “Typical Sun Wukong. Only worrying about yourself and what interests you. You just want to look good in front of the monk. Good to know he trained you well.”
Wukong growled dangerously. “Careful with those words piglet.”
“You’re just a lapdog sent to destroy demons when you’re supposed to.”
“You’re on thin ice.”
“For someone so great, you can’t see how low you really are.”
Macaque was fully prepared for Wukong to just tear the other apart. Only for the monk to hold him back, advising to rise above the words and to not let anger cloud his actions. Which left Macaque angrier than before. Seeing how Wukong was being treated, how he couldn’t rightfully fight back, Macaque was angry that the golden monkey wouldn’t just leave them! This was a clear indication that he was with the wrong people, how could he not see this! What did these people have that he didn’t?
If that pig demon wanted a threat for Wukong to go after, so be it. The second crack was formed.
It was…disturbingly easy to swoop in and kidnap the monk. Who seemed rather uncaring that a demon was stealing him away.
Macaque had claimed a mountain range as the battlefield. The monk resting on a rock, uncaring as an enraged demon paced back and forth. Macaque’s mind racing, heart hammering in hope for this to work.
“This will not ease his mind.”
Macaque halted in his movements hearing the monk finally talk. Looking over to see the human’s eyes still closed. “What does that even mean?
“Wukong’s mind is a rage of emotions right now. He’s trying to find who he wants to be and who he wants to leave behind. This plan will not ease his mind and it will not give you what you want.”
The Shadow Warrior growled and punched the rock near the monk. Who was unmoving. “You don’t know him, not like I do. And I refuse to listen to someone who tortures my friend for their own needs.”
“Do you think this will prove anything to him?”
“That he shouldn’t have left me behind.”
“Perhaps he wanted to improve himself before he found you once more.”
That caused Macaque to falter, but returned to his scowl the next second. “You don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m going to show him that I know him better than you. That he just needs me and not you.”
Whatever plan that Macaque had, it immediately disappeared when Wukong finally arrived. Determination to have Wukong understand his point chilled to absolute fear. Because the golden monkey looked downright furious. Fangs bared and a dark growl sounding deeply from his chest. Fur on end, hands balled tightling into fists.
“Wukong-” Macaque barely got the name out before he was slammed into the ground, wincing at the pain blossoming from his back and neck.
“I told you to LEAVE,” Wukong growled darkly, “But you just had to make my life harder, didn’t you. Why can’t you just let me do this!”
“Because they’re hurting you!” Macaque attempted to argue back.
“I want to be here! I need to do this!”
“You can’t believe that, you just can’t…”
“It’s my punishment-”
“You’ve been punished enough.”
Wukong let out a heavy sigh, eyes shut tightly as he shakes his head. “Macaque, stop this, you need to go-”
“Do you just want to run away from everything from your past? Is that what this was? Just…forget what you had?”
“No-”
“Then I’m just not good enough for you.”
Wukong faltered at that. “What- No.”
“Then what is this self-sacrificial journey!?”
“My attempt to redeem myself, and you are not allowed to pull me away from this. Return my master before you make it worse Macaque.”
“No.”
“Macaque-”
“If I have to beat the lesson into you, I will.”
“Don’t say things that you’ll regret.”
“I won’t rest until I bring you home!” Macaque growled back, “You will never get a moment's peace and anyone close to you will become a target if you continue this!”
Wukong’s eyes widened, almost fearfully. “Macaque…take that back now.”
He didn’t. He doubled down. “That monk is on the top of my list.”
That did it. Quiet conversations were gone now. It becomes a storm of blind, anger filled attacks with shrieks and cries echoing over the mountain range. Once, Macaque knew he was a better fighter than Wukong. When they were young, when it wasn’t a life and death situation. When it was about who got the last piece of fruit and not a means to survive. While the Shadow Warrior had his own tricks and battle style…he knew he wasn’t going to win this. Wukong not only had training, skilled training, but there was burning rage behind each hit. Macaque doing his best to just barely dodge or block each blow.
He wasn’t sure how long it went. He wasn’t sure what damage had been dealt to the surrounding area. All he knew was both he and Wukong were supporting numerous wounds. Macaque felt every part of him feeling broken, bleeding from a number of areas, and supporting his right side. Wukong looked just as bad as the Shadow Warrior felt. Both panting heavily as they stared the other down.
Wukong, clearly getting a second wind, let out a cry of anger. Summoning the red staff. Macaque tensed at this, never having faced this weapon before. It was a flash of light and the Shadow Warrior felt himself being knocked back. Slamming into a mountain side hard. Not given a second to breath before he was thrown back into the ground. A crater forming from where he violently landed.
Eyes opening slowly, Macaque felt his heart still seeing Wukong barreling towards him. Staff raised. Aimed right for the Shadow Warrior.
Macaque attempted to move. Trying to get his limbs to respond in some way. Which resulted in nothing more than having his right side facing Wukong more.
There was a sickening crack when the staff finally connected. Macaque swearing he was screaming, but in so much pain that it was hard to tell if he was saying anything. In pain and terrified. Body finally giving out as he collapsed in the crater. A mix of anguish, confusion, and fear flowing through him. Flinching slightly hearing footsteps draw closer. Good eye looking up, vision blurred, as he tried to focus on Wukong. Who was breathing harshly.
“Don’t get up,” Wukong hissed out, “Don’t follow me.”
And that was it. Macaque could only watch as Wukong climbed out of the crater and disappeared into the night.
He wasn’t sure if Wukong had intended for this outcome. But Macaque never left that crater, not alive anyway.
And the third crack fully broke him.
After that was the known story. Made a deal with someone he shouldn’t have. Got his life back. Ignored the promise. Sought out Wukong. Getting a harsh culture shock seeing how much time had passed. Tricking MK into training with him. Getting into another fight. Laughing with rage bubbling inside at the fact that Wukong would protect some kid. Watching Spider Queen’s take over. Maybe taking a bit too much enjoyment in telling MK how untrustworthy his mentor is. Being captured. The Lady Bone Demon. Being sent out to hunt down MK and Wukong. The ice encompassing his arm. The painful cold. The Samadhi Fire chasing the curse away. Wukong Possessed. Saving MK. Saving Wukong. The Lady Bone Demon defeated.
Peace.
Pain as he watched Wukong break down. Panicking when Bai singles him out as some sort of comfort. Trying to find his place with everyone. Trying to get used to being around other people. Trying to get used to other people actually caring about him. Pigsy trying to get him and Wukong down to talk like adults.
Letting his walls to start to crumble. Allowing himself to feel honest about himself and Wukong. But still holding back due to the deep seeded fears in the back of his mind. Heart swelling when MK starts hugging him just as the teen does with Wukong. Trying not to seem too pleased when the teen asks to be trained with him again. Feeling a little…flustered realizing he felt like he was part of a family…
It was strange…and still a little confusing. Macaque wanted to fall into this new routine. Of either waking up in Wukong’s nest or his own with plans to tease the golden monkey for the day. Wanting to be as close to the golden monkey. But also knowing a fear was festering beneath the surface. Holding it back so he wouldn’t lose this new life, clinging to what he could.
It was all so perfect…and Macaque knew he was close to snapping.
_________________________
“You want to what?” Macaque raised a brow, staring at the wide eyes of MK.
“Monkey Ki- Um, dad and I were planning a movie night and I wanted you there too. If you wanted. I figured it would be a great way for the three of us to just hang out, since we don’t do that a lot… Unless someone’s not having a good day.”
The Shadow Warrior frowned and rubbed the back of his neck, huffing. The kid wasn’t wrong. Everything was sort of tense between the three. Well, mainly between himself and Wukong. Sure, they’d had a few ‘gentle’ moments between the two. But there were still open wounds from the past that had yet to heal that Macaque wasn’t sure how to make it better. Because Wukong was just as dodgy and the Shadow Warrior wasn’t great at being honest.
MK was the connecting thread between the two monkeys. Both cared about the kid, both wanted what was best for him. They were just too stubborn to not end up in some kind of verbal altercation every time they met. It was like they were trying to find the right words. But past mistakes made it hard.
Macaque rubbed under his right eyes, looking off to the side before turning back to MK. “I’ve…never been to a movie night before. What exactly happens?”
“We sit on the couch, wear super comfy clothes, eat a bunch of junk food, and watch as many movies as we can before we pass out. It’s so much fun!” MK beamed.
“That sounds like an interesting way to spend the evening.”
“So you’ll come?”
Macaque bit his bottom lip before letting out a sigh and nodding. Reaching out to ruffle MK’s hair and pull him close. “Sure, I’ll come. What time do I need to be over?”
MK gasped happily before wrapping his arms around the black furred monkey in a quick hug. “Thank you! We normally start around 6. Just text me and we’ll let you in!”
“Guess I’ll see you then…” Macaque attempted to ignore the knot of unease settling into this stomach. Giving a small wave to the teen as MK took off towards Flower Fruit Mountain. Letting out a slow sigh before saying to himself, “Do I have anything comfortable to wear?”
The anxiety rose as the hours counted down, Macaque feeling a little sick when he arrived at the familiar mountain. Finding MK and Wukong by the roaring waterfall, waiting for the Shadow Warrior. The teen was excited upon seeing Macaque. The black furred monkey laughed softly as he accepted the tackle hug MK gave.
“Hey kid.”
“You came!” MK cheered as he pulled the other along. Talking a mile a minute, about what they had planned, what they had to eat, the teen clearly excited for that night.
Macaque and Wukong gave each other a friendly but stiff nod before following MK in. The small room was set up with a wide next made from pillows and blankets. Macaque wondered how much was physically there and what was made from Wukong’s fur. But decided he shouldn’t focus on that. Around the edge of said nest was a large collection of snacks and drinks to graze from. The small tv as close to the nest as possible, a pile of movies next to it.
MK had already jumped into the nest, starting to look through the collection of movies. Trying to decide which one they needed to start with. Oblivious to the monkeys behind him. Wukong silently nodded towards the nest, a quiet indication for Macaque to claim a spot. The Shadow Warrior said nothing as he passed by, sitting on the furthest edge away from the others. Resting his chin in his hand as he watched MK finally decide on a movie. The teen moved back to get comfortable, laughing when Wukong ruffled his hair, and started the movie proper.
Macaque wasn’t impressed by the first selection. Or the second. Getting pretty bored by the third. He couldn’t tell if it was because whatever was selected just didn’t interest him or if it was because his nerves were getting the better of him. Tail twitching on occasion, his free arm wrapped around himself as some form of shield. Pulled away from the other two as he could be. Not that MK or Wukong gave it much thought. The most attention being from the teen when he asked Macaque if the monkey was comfortable. To which Macaque offered a short ‘Yep.’ as a response.
It was during the middle of the fourth movie that MK passed out. Macaque only aware of this hearing soft snoring to his right. Looking over to find the teen pressed up against Wukong, cheek pressed against the golden monkey’s shoulder. Who seemed to not care about the position. Closed to passing out himself. Sure enough, only a few more moments passed before the Great Sage was asleep as well. Head now laying on MK’s.
Macaque really felt out of place. Why did he agree to this? What did it amount to other than to feel forgotten about again? MK had barely talked to him. Wukong couldn’t even look at him. Macaque felt by himself, strange for how close he was to someone.
He looked up when the screen turned blue, letting out a huff and putting the movie away. Turning the tv off and laying back down on the small section of the next he’d claimed. Falling into an uneasy sleep as his tail wrapped around his leg.
It was cold.
Macaque panicked as eyes snapped open and frantically looked around, trapped in an uncomfortably familiar carter. Fear grew when he realized he couldn’t move. No matter how much he internally screamed, how he struggled, he couldn’t move.
The situation became worse when something landed nearby. The ground shook dangerously before heavy footsteps drew closer. Macaque felt his breath catch when Wukong appeared over the edge. Eyes sharp blue wearing the armor the bone demon had provided. A smirk danced on the golden monkey’s face as he stared down at the trapped Macaque.
“Well…I guess you took my words to heart. You really didn’t get up.”
“This isn’t real,” Macaque whispered desperately, “This isn’t real. Wukong’s not possessed. She’s not back. MK’s fine.”
“You always were a bit of a dreamer.” Wukong laughed as he easily slid down to stand over the other.
“You’re not real.”
“Oh, I’m very real. I beat you into the ground. I left you to rot.”
“Stop talking.”
“Why, you know it’s true? I’m just brave enough to say it aloud. All that uncertainty must fester like poison in you. Slowly dying inside. Why would I want anything to do with you?”
Macaque winces as he was lifted up by his throat, unable to raise his hands to claw at it. Left to gasp desperately for air. “Y-You’re…not…him…”
“Are you sure? Maybe you’re right. Maybe all I am is just the mental manifestation of the Wukong you hate. Or the version you still see him as. The one who had no problem leaving you behind. Sees you as nothing more than a waste of space. Weak. Unworthy. You should have just remind dea-”
Macaque let out a scream of rage. Finally able to raise his left arm and quickly brought it down. Claws swiping over Wukong’s left eye. The Shadow Warrior was released, scrambling away as eyes widened fearfully watching the golden monkey. Who was doubled over in pain, hand over his eye as blood flowed freely between the fingers.
The situation became far more terrifying when Wukong started to laugh. Quietly at first before he leaned back laughing maniacally towards the sky. When he finally faced the other, Macaque felt sick seeing that Wukong’s left eye was completely gone. Now nothing more than a gaping hole, blood flowing down like tears.
“Ah…and eye for an eye? We have a matching set now…” Macaque scrambled back as Wukong stalked forward once more. Barely able to get away before his ankle was grabbed and had been dragged back down. Unable to fight back as he’s pinned down. Eyes widening in fear as the golden monkey towers over him. An uneasy smile stretched across his face. “I don’t suppose you have a spare eye for me to use, do you?”
“...No, don’t-”
“Don’t worry, I’ll make it quick.”
“Don’t!”
“Hold still.”
“Wukong don’t!”
“Stop fighting. What’s one more weakness for you?”
“Stop!”
“Macaque…”
“Let me go, please!”
“Macaque!”
“Don’t do this!”
“Macaque, wake up!”
Eyes snapped open, the Shadow Warrior still felt trapped. He recognized that someone was bending over him. Causing a small freak out and he warped himself away. Not that far as Macaque was still confused as to where he was but knew he was away from that person. The ground was cold and smooth. Stone. So was he outside? Was he back there? His magic was going crazy, he could tell. The shadows were giving back to much and conflicting information.
He was on a mountain.
No, he was in a mountain.
So he was outside?
No, a cave. He knew this cave, he was safe here.
There was someone near- It was Wukong! He needed to run!
But MK’s here too and Wukong looks…scared?
Macaque flinched when he heard someone draw closer. The footsteps sounded so much louder than what they actually were. But between his enhanced hearing and his raised sense of fear, Macaque could hear everything.
He attempted to bat a hand away. Only for it to gently grip his shoulder, hearing, “Hey, it’s just me. It’s MK…”
MK…he knew MK. His -son- student.
Breathing became calmer, Macaque blinking to slowly clear his vision. Sure enough, MK’s face came into view. The teen looked very concerned as he was kneeling next to Macaque. One hand on the monkey’s shoulder while the other was held out nervously.
“...Hey kid.” Macaque said weakly.
“Hey, you okay?”
The Shadow Warrior’s voice caught when he tried to say ‘of course’. Because at the moment, he was just tired. Causing his head to bow forward before shaking his head. “No…No, I’m not okay…”
“O-Okay, what do you need?”
Macaque shook his head weakly. Unsure of how to answer or what the correct answer was. His eyes flickered up, landing on Wukong. Who wasn’t dressed in his armor. Instead in sweats and looking worried.
But for whatever reason, this didn’t calm Macaque down. Rage instead built up. Before MK could say anything else, Macaque had darted forward. Fangs bared in absolute rage as he pinned a shocked Wukong down.
MK stood up quickly, following behind with wide eyes. “Macaque-”
“YOU LEFT ME!” Macaque’s throat was sore, voice cracking in absolute anger. Wukong, eyes wide, only able to look up with confusion and worry. “You left me… I spent over 500 years trying to find you and when I do, you’re with these people who didn’t care about you! They tortured you, belittled you, and I don’t care what you say because I know I’m right with this and you just…let it happen! And when it came down to it, when I tried to tell you…you picked them… I was with you from the beginning and you just left me…”
Macaque let out a shaky breath. “Why? Was I just not…good enough for you?”
“...You were-”
“You left me for dead!” the Shadow Warrior growled out, “Do not- …Don’t say that unless you mean it.”
Wukong swallowed softly, shifting to free his hands so he could pull Macaque closer. Who didn’t argue back. Clinging to the golden monkey desperately. “...Why didn’t you talk about this before? Crazy chef forced us to spill everything…”
“...I didn’t want to hear the answer you would give… I was afraid that I’d be…right. That I wasn’t what you wanted.”
“But it’s not helpful if you leave it alone.”
“I know. …I know. But I was hopeful that after we talked I would…feel better. But I think I feel worse.”
Taking a deep breath, Wukong replied with, “I wasn’t fully honest before either.”
“...How? You said…everything you wanted to.”
Wukong could only laugh weakly, nuzzling against Macaque’s cheek. “I wanted to be better for you.”
“What?”
“I wasn’t lying when I said I wanted to become stronger, to be better… I was forced to realize that my actions had severe consequences. It was terrifying to think how I could have hurt anyone…how I could have hurt you. I was scared of who I was becoming. My master was a form of a relief. A way for me to learn how to manage myself.”
“Before you say anything, you’re right… I knew what was happening was unfair,” Wukong said quickly feeling Macaque shift, “It was torture, it was painful, I’d never felt so alone than when I was with them. Possibly because I was hopeful that in some way we would have gotten along. That I would break whatever barrier they had up and we could become friends. It amounted to tolerance if anything…”
“But you stayed.” Macaque whispered.
“But I stayed. Because I focused on doing better for you. Believing that this would lead me to be a better person.” Wukong let out a weak laugh, breathing shaky as he pressed his face into the crook of Macaque’s neck.
The Shadow Warrior panicked slightly, feeling the other’s shoulders shaking weakly. “Peaches-”
“Then you showed up and it was like something was ripped from me. Because you said everything that I had kept down and I didn’t want to face that. But…you didn’t let it go…and I felt as if my last life line was trying to drown me as well…”
“And I only made it worse by taking that monk.”
“Yeah…yeah you did.”
Macaque laughed weakly, feeling himself start to break further. “I thought what I was doing was going to help you… I thought I was being so clever and in the right, and all I did was make it worse. Suppose I deserve-”
The Shadow Warrior would never admit to the yelp that escaped him when he was suddenly pinned to the next. Flushing slightly as Wukong was now towering over him. Eyes slightly red with the fur matted down and wet, a deep frown on his face. “Don’t you dare.”
“But-”
“No, you don’t get to say something like that to try and make this better. To think it would make it better. I’ve had this weighing on my shoulders for so long, it’s become the largest sin I carry and nothing can take it from me. No words or actions can take this from me because I will always feel horrible for what I’ve done. I…I killed you.”
That single sentence seemed to suck the air out of both. Macaque was shocked that the golden monkey had said it so easily. Wukong’s eyes widened as if he was hit with the full realization of what he’d done. As if saying it out loud made it real. The Shadow Warrior felt his heart break further when tears started to fall from Wukong’s eyes once more.
“Peaches, it’s okay-”
“Oh…Gods, I killed you. I didn’t learn anything! After all I did, it amounted to my worst fear being realized by my own hands! Did…Did I get better in any way?” Wukong didn’t argue as he was pulled closer, allowing him to collapse into Macaque. Both clinging to the other desperately, racing hearts starting to calm down as they allowed themselves to relax.
“...We really aren’t doing well, are we?” Macaque offered weakly.
A question that Wukong gave a choked laugh to. “Might help if we actually talked…”
“Yeah… You left me for dead.”
“I did.”
“You left and I felt like the bad guy for doing what I thought was right. But in a way, I kind of was…”
The golden monkey sighed softly. “I…wasn’t much help with that though. I thought I knew what I wanted, what I was working for. I didn’t want to listen because you were saying what I didn’t want to hear. …I think I was also afraid of…of messing up… Of having to go back…”
Macaque breathed slowly before saying, “I’m sorry…I didn’t even think about how that could have left scars, just unseen ones.”
“Wasn’t your fault.”
“Still, we’re both carrying a lot, I should have known better.”
“I shouldn’t have let my anger get the better of me.”
“And I should have let you do what you thought was right.”
Wukong sighed softly, easily tucking himself under the other’s chin. “...Are we going to be okay?”
“Don’t know…but I’d like to think we will be.”
“...I’m not good with opening up.”
“I don’t think I am either.”
“Don’t suppose it’ll look weird for deities to go to counseling?”
Macaque laughed at that. Pulling Wukong closer to press their foreheads together. “How about we just agree to take this slow and actually talk to each other. You know, try being somewhat normal.”
“Suppose that’s a fair offer.” The golden monkey didn’t wait another second before swooping down to kiss Macaque. Who accepted it happily. “Uh…is MK still in here?”
The Shadow Warrior looked over the other’s shoulder to find the room empty. “No, I think he slipped out a while ago.”
“I should probably find him…are you okay with that?”
“Yeah, we can talk more tomorrow. When I’m feeling a little more aware.”
Macaque sat up and Wukong stood, the golden monkey letting out a yawn before walking out of the small room. Coming back soon enough with an arm wrapped around MK’s shoulders. The teen looked like he was fighting sleep.
“You okay?” MK asked with a wide yawn.
“Yeah…we’re getting there.”
The teen hummed softly but said nothing more. Lying in the nest once more and curling on his side before falling asleep once more. Wukong let out a snort before saying, “Poor kid was passed out when I found him.”
“And you forced him to wake up?” Macaque shook his head, “For shame Peaches.”
“No I didn’t. I was going to carry him, but he woke up when I got closer…I think he’s on edge…”
“Don’t think about it now. Sleep first, worry tomorrow.” Macaque was surprised when Wukong stepped into the nest and laid behind him. Arms wrapping around his middle to pull him closer. “Um…”
“Making up for lost time. Don’t think about it.”
The Shadow Warrior let out a small laugh but didn’t argue. Instead, he pulled MK closer, who instantly clung onto the black furred monkey and slept on. Wukong laughed before laying back down. Macaque listening as the golden monkey’s heart slowed, soft snoring eventually sounded. Now surrounded by warmth and comforting sounds, Macaque’s eyes slowly closed, soon falling asleep.
When Remus walks in their apartment, he immediately knows.
The dishes are half-done. The laundry is half-folded. Cleaning supplies are out, and the floor is shinier at his left than at his right. The snacks they left out after breakfast are piled up, but not put back in the cabinet.
That’s how he knows that something happened, and that, whatever that is, Sirius is not happy about it.
“Fuck” he mutters under his breath, as he takes the coat off and leaves the keys on the tray.
“Sirius?” he calls out “I’m home”
No answer. “Love?”
Still no answer, and the fear that his husband might not actually be home creeps up along his spine. Because Sirius upset, with him, in the house is one thing, but Sirius upset, alone and god-knows-where is something else entirely.
“Sirius, are you here?”
When no one answers once again, Remus finds his hand running over his face before he can even realize it. “Please, lord have mercy, don’t let him have done anything stupid,” which Remus figures is a bit much to ask, even for a supposedly omnipotent being. He knows just how hard it is to stop Sirius from doing something stupid once he sets his mind to it.
He roams his house for a while, just in case Sirius is somewhere around here and he just hasn’t acknowledged Remus yet. No luck, though.
By now Remus is properly full-on worried and is caressing the idea of running out and go look for Sirius, but as the only one among his friends with any impulse control, he instead resolves to do the only sensible thing he can think of and floo calls James. If anything, the Potters might at least know what the fuck is going on.
“Moony? Oh thank Merlin— wait, stay here,” and at that point Remus doesn’t know what holds him back from yelling and where the fuck am I supposed to go? Probably just the fact that the floo in front of him wouldn’t provide a listener, considering that it now stands empty.
He hears vague noises and a few phantoms of yells, but among them he’s pretty sure he hears the words “Pads” and “Sirius” and somehow the thoughts of course he’s at James’s and what the fuck is he doing at James’s both simultaneously form in Remus’s head.
When the other finally appears through the fire, Remus knows that his earlier suspicions had been right if Sirius’s appearance is anything to go by. To be fair, he can’t really tell through the fire, but Sirius’s expression screams trouble, ruinous and terrible trouble. God, he’d swear Sirius has been crying.
“Moony! For Merlin’s sake, where were you?” Sirius yells as soon as he come into focus
“Funny you should ask that considering the I’M the one currently sitting in our living room” he yells back “and may l add, the living room you left looking like a war zone and with no trace of where the fuck you were”
To that Sirius has the audacity to roll his eyes, “Not NOW, Moony, I know where you are NOW” he goes on yelling “but where the fuck were you BEFORE? I thought you said…”
“That’s because you never listen to me, Sirius! I told you I had a meeting…”
“Yes! With Moody!”
“…with Dumbledore”
“Oh,” that seems to calm Sirius down, Merlin only knows why, and a dry laugh escapes his mouth “At Hogwarts?”
“Yes, at Hogwarts!” Remus goes on, with his voice still raised, because whatever charm seemed to have calmed down Sirius it certainly didn’t work on him, “Where else?”
“Right, yeah” Sirius gives him a soft smile, and Remus almost feels bad for yelling, just almost though. “I just thought—“ he pauses “I thought you were meeting Moody”
If those words mean anything to Sirius, he doesn’t share what. “What difference would that make?” Remus scoffs.
“Rem” he insists, “I thought you were meeting with Moody at the Ministry”
Remus tries to process if this clarification actually clarified anything, but he finds that, as suspected, it does not. However, Sirius’s grave tone still sends a feeling of uneasiness rushing through him. “So?” he says, trying and failing to hide the concern in his voice.
A sudden realization seems to hit Sirius. “Oh,” he says, “you don’t know?”
“Know what?” and Remus is yelling out of exasperation again, against his better judgement.
Sirius runs a hair through his hair, and suddenly grown more serious “Moony, there was an attack at the Ministry,” he starts and then pauses, “a lot of people were hurt, the Dark Mark appeared, and—“
“Oh,” now it’s Remus’s turn to be hit by realization, “And you thought…”
“Yes, I thought”
“Pads,” he starts, his face softens, and now Remus definitely feels bad for yelling “I’m so sorry”
“No, Moons don’t,” he sighs, “I’ll turn this thing off so I can come home, yes?”
Remus nods, but Sirius has already hanged up and, before Remus can realize it, his fireplace is bursting into flames and Sirius is pulling him in a hug.
As Remus’s arms wraps around him, Sirius sighs in relief. “Merlin Moony, I was so scared,” he says as he nuzzled in his chest.
“I know, love,” he says holding him tighter. “God, I know, I’m so sorry,” he nuzzles in his neck, “but I’m here now, okay?”
“Yes, here” Sirius confirms, more to himself than anything else “here, and safe”

Silent are the streets at that time of evening, the gentle drizzling of rain coating the pavements and obscuring windows alike a refreshing addition to the obscenity of the situation at hand.
Within the rain, disorientated and uncertain, does Vaux stand; the pale blue of his eyes fixate upon the broken windows of his store front, the anxious and frightened hammering of his heart within his chest forcing sensations of nausea into the back of his throat.
All had happened so very quickly. To think, but an hour prior he had simply been catching up on delayed orders in the very back of the store, quietly listening to music while the thrum of the sewing machine continued before him. As ever, regardless of the late hour, was he accurate and perfectly comfortable in his concentrating state. But 't was not to last.
The sound of the door being broken in, the smashing of glass and the extreme loud voices of men came from nowhere and ere Vaux had chance to do more than stand and part lips to speak was he threatened to his knees by knifepoint. The abuse that followed kept him occupied mentally for the entire length of time it took for the male's accomplices to root around for expensive materials ere leaving a wake of destruction in their wake.
It took the tailor some few moments ere he felt ready enough to sit himself up, off of the floor - the throbbing of his head immense, the dizziness that followed enough to keep him seated upon marble tiles. He leans against his desk, focuses - just for a time - upon breathing and slowing the hammering of his heart.
By the time he stands, his eyes have already surveyed the mess of his store- the smashed glass, the door hanging off of its hinges. 'T was immediately apparent within his consciousness that his alarm system had either not worked or had been disabled... and thus his stomach lurched in nauseated rebellion. It would take days to clean up the mess indoors... but the glazing and doors would take much longer.
Slowly, steadily, he moves through the low lighting of the store and eventually out into the rain where the cool of the water unto his aching head soothes. Blood stains the side of his face and hair, the split within his lip sore and there was no doubt that reddening was placed where bruising would soon blossom.
What was he to do? Yet disorientated and dizzy, Vaux found he could do little more than stand and stare blankly forwards towards the madness before him - his assailants and thieves long gone...
Red lights were shining down on you, bathing you in an ominous glow. The whine of the alarms were only vaguely heard, more of a memory of what they should sound like instead of actually hearing them. It took you an embarrassingly long time to figure out what was happening and it was mostly due to Bones leaning over you, clutching a tricorder in his slightly bloody hands.
Based on the concern blooming on his face, you had been staring at him for longer then he was comfortable with. And it took an even longer amount of time for you to recognize the fact the Bones had been talking to you, trying to ask you questions.
“-hear me? Darlin’?” Bones was still waving around his tricorder but he was also peering around the broken hallway, trying to spot anybody in the area. That was your biggest clue that you were worse off then you thought.
“Barely but yes. Alarm too loud. Lights hurt. Happened?” Your answers and questions didn’t quite make sense but you figured he’d be able to pierce together what you meant.
“Good, good. Keep your attention on me and stay awake. Definitely got some kind of head trauma — more then usual at least. Can’t do anything bout the alarms or lights though, darlin’. Just gonna have to ride it out till I can get you to a functioning Medbay. Something hit the ship, knocked out the shields in one hit, far as I can tell. Power too. All this,” here, Bones waved his hand around to indicate the still working alarms and emergency lights but nothing else, “is running on a backup power. I need you to stay here and stay awake for a minute. Need to see if anyone else in on this level or if there’s any med supplies around. Can ya do that for me?”
You tried to nod your head but a sharp, lancing pain froze you in place. “I’ll try my best, Doc.”
Bones had already turned away from you and so his parting words were shy from over his shoulder, “Do or do not. There is no try.”
The wyverns had flocked from nowhere - clear skies offering no advantage to those heading back from the highlands through deep snows. Unable to move quickly through the depths, the few found themselves forced to adapt and stand in a position far too perilous to not be careful. Battle, however, offered no time to be careful and with blades drawn had all done their utmost. As one wyvern fell, so did a Knight - picking one another off one at a time.
Relief for those of whom had survived was instantaneous once the final Wyvern fell, only for it to be short lived when one of a much larger nature landed before them. With scarce enough time to grasp ones breath, Aymeric dove straight back into battle alongside his brothers with the hopes that they would all come out unscathed.
Unfortunately, as with the battle that had happened but only a few moments prior, few happenings of such ever came without a price; Aymeric knew that from his years in command and now he knew it perhaps more personally for he found himself gripped by the creatures firm claws, near crushed at the chest and tossed aside as if nary more than unwanted scraps. Though a struggle, he clawed his way up, retrieved his blade and attempted back into the fray only to witness two more of his men fall.
Wounds pulsed, but the Lord Commander was not one to allow those few remaining to fight the vulgarity before them on their own, regardless of how much he was hurting. Finally did all come to an end swiftly for Aymeric was grasped within the beasts maw, all teeth sinking deeply into the commander of whom was soon tossed to the ground into the snows; the remainder of his men falling moments later.
With pale blue eyes staring up towards the mirrored skies above, Aymeric felt the heat of blood saturate his clothing, slick across metal - breathing was short for pain was obscene, the inability to find any strength to move worrisome. He needed to move, to continue the long walk towards the nearest camp if he wished to seek medical aid and yet not a singular limb responded to wills of movement.
Coughing; blood stained his chin, the action alone causing great agony throughout the desperately injured elezen. Only moments had passed but the snows surrounding his person strewn across the ground offered beautiful solace in numbness, though in turn did it sap the heat from his body. He’d not last if he did not move, not with the skies clouding, not with the rate at which he was losing blood, not at the rate he was succumbing to the chill.
Though he could not move his head, Aymeric could see a few of his fallen men within his line of vision, no matter how much it had begun to blur - all of them were gone...? So he was to perish...alone..?
