rob’s apartment in high fidelity (2020)
one of my favorite details in high fidelity is rob’s apartment, and knowing how intentional it was makes it even better. production designer almitra corey designed it to feel real, lived-in, and emotionally synced to where rob is at in her life.
the apartment shifts depending on the moment. when rob is with mac, the space feels taken care of, plants everywhere, better artwork, a sense that someone is paying attention. after the breakup, things slowly unravel. there’s one lonely succulent left, clothes on the floor, junk food out, a general feeling of mess. nothing dramatic, just quietly off. the apartment starts mirroring her without needing to explain anything.
even the colors were chosen with that in mind. the walls were painted a deep midnight blue and a dusty mauve that could shift in tone depending on the lighting, sometimes cooler and sometimes warmer, giving the space mood and emotional texture without being literal.
what i love most is that nothing feels staged or overly designed. it looks like a real crown heights apartment with a history, like a real place someone lived in, not just a set. that grounded realism is what pulls you into rob’s world.
