I took a big ol’ slacking off break during Steven Bomb. And I had a lot of time today to work things out! The bad news is that most of what I worked out is in following chapters, so it took a lot of extra planning tonight to sort out Chapter 10

Yes, Homeworld knows there are “Crystal Gems” on earth, but the importantly Homeworld doesn’t seem to know who specifically they are--and most importantly of all, who Steven is.

Up until Steven revealed his shield, the Homeworld Gems treated the Crystal Gems as a nuisance. Peridot was annoyed that they were breaking her stuff. Jasper was annoyed to even be brought along on this mission. She instructed Peridot to blast them with the ship and be done with it.

That changed when Steven revealed he had the Rose Quartz gem. They were upgraded from “unimportant riffraff” to “holy shit this thing has Rose’s gem Yellow Diamond needs to see this. This is our mission now.”

We know Lapis withheld information to protect Steven, and we know Peridot didn’t quite understand what Steven even was. But Jasper did. And apparently this discovery is something Homeworld is very interested in.

Luckily the Crystal Gems crashed the ship, and Lapis has Jasper at the bottom of the ocean. From Homeworld, it probably looks like these rogue Crystal Gems managed to take the ship down.

Homeworld could retaliate for that much. But they only lost two Gems. We know they’re not overly interested in Earth anyway (just a pet project with the clusters) so the hope--from Garnet’s perspective--is that they wouldn’t waste the time and manpower looking for revenge.

But if Peridot can make contact with Homeworld, and if she tells them about Steven and the Rose Quartz gem, it’s entirely likely they’ll take the same interest that Jasper did in Steven. Peridot has dangerous information. It’s strategically better for them to kill Peridot now rather than risk that.
