You know this whole " don't give unsolicited concrit" thing, gives me the same vibe as the change of discourse from "no means no" to "yes means yes". You are passing the job of putting the limits from the individual to the society, it's generally healthier but it asks people to do extra work in their interactions like ask if that's ok and some people don't want to do that( just to be clear I'm not comparing unsolicited concrit to rape, it's more the boundaries thing like touching or hugging)
It's more like those classes teaching children about boundaries and the aunts and uncles that get mad that they can't hug or touch or force a kid to spend time with them without being confronted by said kid
Yeah, that’s pretty much exactly it. It’s not a big deal to acquire consent in most life settings. It’s an adjustment, but it’s not nearly as big of a deal as some people make it out to be.
It’s not even just touching! My partner and I have a rough time doing family time, especially with my family, who can be a toss up if the visit will go alright or end up in a blowout fight. So before every family event, we exchange permissions; hey, I’m going to go to my family’s event, do you want to go or not? I never assume he wants to go, and he never assumes I want to go (even though his family is super chill and normal!) because sometimes the answer is no, and consent rules require acquiring consent every time. Dinner? I am going to make X for dinner, do you want the same thing? Housework? Are you alright putting the laundry in tonight?
It’s just like.... such a small, simple change to make, but it makes a HUGE difference to the people on the receiving end.
