And so our observations of our local sex magnet/comedian/hype man comes to a close! Here are my observations of good ol' RTT in Act Two!
While he is absent for Moments of Happiness and Moonlight, Tugger quietly reappears for Skimble’s number. He has an exchange with Cassandra and perched above the fray for the performance, singing along with the ensemble, even mimicking the pull of the rope for the train whistle with some of the others. However he doesn’t participate in assembling the train, he’s disappeared by the time the train falls apart.
Tugger reemerges after the tribe does battle with Macavity, suggesting a solution to their missing leader in Mister Mistoffelees, utterly certain he can fix their problem. He pleads with them all to listen to him and to take his suggestion seriously with an earnestness akin to his solo in Old Deuteronomy.
He then launches into a carnival barker-like musical monologue hyping up Mistoffelees, warming up the crowd so that they are singing the chorus by the time Misto actually arrives. Boasting of his illusory powers, abilities to befuddle and to conjure, and of his appearance, physique, and grace. As well as his talent for mystifying others with traditional magician card tricks and dice. He also describes Misto’s ability to teleport/transpose objects.
He looks absolutely delighted as Mistoffelees turns the lights back on. Unfazed as Misto causes multiple explosions. He goes on to explaining that Misto’s usual outward manner of “vague and aloof” belies his true nature as a powerful and clever magician.
He dances with Mistoffelees, noting that he’s “known the family to call him in from the garden for hours” implying at least knows of Mistoffelees’s human family. Getting extra hyped up as he announces Misto once magically summoned seven kittens out of a hat. Misto looks a bit distressed by this line but Tugger gives him a sort of “don’t worry”-ish gesture as he continues to praise him.

He gleefully follows Misto after he sends a glittering rainbow ribbon into his feline audience. Wrapping his arms around Electra and Etcetera and he and the rest of the cast watch Mistoffelees perform. Laughing and pointing and cheering whenever Misto does anything especially impressive. Once again celebrating the seven kittens feat.
When it comes time for Mistoffelees to choose a volunteer in order to teleport Deuteronomy back to the Jellicle Ball, he postures and preens. When Cassandra is chosen he says/mouths something inaudible to Misto and looks a little bit awkward for the first time in the musical, brushing it off when he is not chosen. Strutting back and forth while the spell takes place and gives a little air fist bump to Mungojerrie.
He also gives Misto a little reassuring nod and a “you got this” gesture to him right before he successfully brings back Deuteronomy. Tugger’s musicality goes very sweet and sentimental as Deuteronomy gives him a questioning look as though asking if he’s responsible for his miraculous return. He tenderly takes Deuteronomy’s paws and then puts an arm around Deut’s shoulder, turns him and points to Misto, making certain Deuteronomy knows who truly did it.
He pushes Deuteronomy towards Mistoffelees for their embrace, joining the ensemble’s dance, celebrating and riffing during the celebration of Mistoffelees accomplishments and Deuteronomy’s return. Hyping up Misto one last time as he leaps into the air and vanishes.
After the small timeskip/crossfade, Tugger is sat between Misto and Electra, Electra nuzzles him as they head towards Deuteronomy once the time for the Jellicle Choice is announced, reaching up to Deuteronomy alongside Misto. He is the first to turn and notice Misto’s sudden alertness to Grizabella’s presence.
He does not hiss or swipe at Grizabella, nor does he keep his distance. He gets close to her and makes broad gesture for Griz to head towards Munkustrap and Deuteronomy is flippant and disdainful, the expression he makes when she isn’t looking is slightly more mixed, both displeased and thoughtful before he goes somewhere (possibly to shun her like the other cats) out of camera view.
After Memory is complete, Tugger and Cassandra get a bit closer to Grizabella paw-in-paw but do not touch her, he looks a bit stunned (and possibly misty eyed).
He is not part of the entourage that walks behind Deuteronomy and Grizzabella, he is perched next to the tire and singing along with the rest of the cast as Griz is chosen to ascend. Standing and raising an arm as the singing crescendos, never looking away from Deut & Griz.
He Raises his arms triumphantly and enthusiastically as the tire begins to ascend. Reaching up towards the Heaviside Layer just like everyone else (where otherwise he has been absent from most spiritual/elder spotlighting elements of the story like Munk’s opening explanation, Moments of Happiness and so on).
When the Ad-Dressing of Cats begins, both he and Munkustrap are perched on the highest platforms on either side of Deuteronomy’s magically levitated tire. He and Munkustrap only dance with everyone else near the end of the song.

Guess who's still in Jellicle Hell! These are my curious act one observations of our wonderful obnoxious boy THE Rum Tum Tugger!
(If the opening number is a flashback) when RTT was a kitten/adolescent he was potentially human-less (no collar) and not nearly as fluffy as he is in his prime.
His first line in the show is “can you say of your bite that it’s worse than your bark?” A little funny considering he’s one of the only cats who doesn’t really fight, swat, or hiss at anyone.
Tugger is placed in one of the downstage groups close to Deuteronomy and Munkustrap (as well as Skimble, Asparagus, & Jellylorum) in the opening dance break.
When the cats all group up, Tugger stands in the front row between Munkustrap and Mistoffelees. When Jennyanydots hits the high C he looks spooked and then irreverently annoyed.
As they continue to sing, Tugger is preening a bit and looking very confident, he’s slightly turned towards Munkustrap for a noticeable chunk of it.

His reaction to the boot startling everyone (on top of being well, startled) is disgust, how dare this stupid human shoe interrupt their beautiful singing.
When the opening song changes to the topic of Jellicle spirituality, while most of the other cats have an expression of joy or reverence, his is more of a neutral to prideful expression, leaning into the unashamed felinity.
Rum Tum Tugger decides to show up to the Jellicle Ball fashionably late. Not only that, but with a catastrophically huge entrance that steps on the toes of his elders.
His entire song is devoted to disliking being told what to do or what to like. He prefers the opposite of what’s being offered out of pride or spite at being directed. He’s prideful, swaggering and absolutely loves to entertain.
He intentionally delights the younger queens and teases the Toms that try to imitate him. He looks like he’s about to say something to Misto and is genuinely surprised and confused when he gets called a “terrible bore”. To which he responds by getting even more extra in the following verse.
He is not into Bombalurina absolutely throwing herself at him. However he does have the absolute nerve to tease and flirt with her before playing aloof and hard-to-get again. The next verse being about how he only likes what he gets on his own terms, and “doesn’t care for a cuddle” would prefer to approach rather than be approached.
On the line that he enjoys to disrupt and cause chaos. He makes a point to actually do so by interrupting Jennyanydots and Jellylorum’s sewing and giving them both a peck on the cheek.
When Demeter seems kind of out of it and not paying attention to him he tries to mess with her a little bit, not noticing and/or not caring when she hisses and swipes at him.
Even as he deliberately goads the younger queens into freaking out and fawning over him, he shushes Etcetera when she gets a little too enthusiastic for his tastes.
He immediately drops the bravado, points out that Grizabella is coming as a warning to the other cats, then promptly fucks off to somewhere else.
Tugger is completely absent for Grizabella the Glamour Cat, Bustopher Jones, and Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer, returning for Old Deuteronomy’s first appearance. His entrance is not as loud and intrusive as his first, other than contributing to Munkustrap explaining Deut to the kittens doesn’t go out of his way to draw attention to himself.
His contribution to the lore around Deuteronomy was that he has loved and buried anywhere from 9 to 99 wives. When he says “numerous progeny” he gestures out to the whole tribe before his gaze lands on Munkustrap on the words “prospers and thrives”.
He is looking and singing to Munkustrap during the verse about everyone being proud of Deuteronomy even as he ages with a respectful nod, his expression during his whole solo is one of joy and pride. He continues looking at Munkustrap during the next solo but remains standing in a confident posture while everyone else is on the main floor.
When Munkustrap sings “when he sits in the sun” Tugger has his head held high and does a small graceful arc as he looks skyward.
He looks thoughtful and pleased lets out a contented sigh while Munkustrap finishes the verse that leads to the chorus, giving a little smug nod like “yes I am singing with you” when Munkustrap seems delighted and surprised by their duet. His expression changes from delighted serenity to one of pure excitement, spotting Deuteronomy even before Munkustrap does.
He sings the chorus again with all of the tribe but still stays apart from them all on his perch. Deut makes an “oh there you are!” Expression when he sees Tugger. Both he and Deuteronomy have their heads held high and puff up their chests upon eye contact.
Deuteronomy shakes his head in an amused(?) way before Tugger gives him a gleeful, flourishing bow. Briefly giving a casual opened armed “what can you do?” Sort of gesture when Deut reaches his arm out towards him, continuing to sing the chorus as Munkustrap helps him up the steps.
Deut seems to glance at Tugger when he says “and be careful of Old Deuteronomy” He is already gone somewhere else by the time Munkustrap leads everyone into the Pekes & Pollicles number.
Tugger largely does not participate or watch most of the Pekes and Pollicles, except to amuse and cause trouble by jumping in and playing makeshift bagpipes. He kills his own comedic bit on accident by doing it twice, the second time everyone looking more confused than anything while he’s like “eh?? Eh??? Funny right?”
He is once again absent for an extended period until the back half of the singing segment of the Jellicle Ball, where Mistoffelees freezes directly next to his confident posturing as he gazes down at him. His only solo line in the Jellicle Ball in the context of “if it happens the sun is shining bright” he completes it with “you would say we had nothing to do at all!”
Once again titillating the young queens with a sway of his hips, aloof he allows them to rub up and fawn over him during the Jellicle Ball chorus. For the final chorus he is placed between Alonzo and Tumblebrutus. is dance group for the next segment includes Asparagus, Jellylorum, Pouncival and Cassandra.
He ends up directly face to face with Munkustrap briefly before the dance becomes uniform again. Once it does become uniform again, Munkustrap, George and Cassandra are adjacent to him in the furthest downstage row.
After the queens get their spotlight segment, Tugger takes a dance partner in the form of Bombalurina, center up stage, the two of them getting handsy as other dancers return to the forefront.
Eventually he ends up lounging atop one of the higher platforms to watch the next part of the dance in which Misto & Tumble are in the forefront. Staying in the back row when Deuteronomy takes center stage.
During the intimate slow gathering aspect of the Jellicle Ball, Tugger ends up curled up between Jennyanydots and the twins Rumpleteazer & Mungojerrie. Once the music returns to liveliness, he’s surrounded by the psychic twins, Demeter, Bombalurina & Tumblebrutus.
He, Munkustrap & Cassandra all get to take part in an enormous running leap dance move tracked by the camera. After which he takes a step back and hangs out with Old Deuteronomy. Putting a hand on his shoulder and chatting with him while nearly everyone else continues partying.
Moments after Munkustrap returns from the dance he leads Plato, Mungojerrie, George and Alonzo in a powerful upstage dance sequence. Spearheading the electric guitar frenetic final group segment, ending up center downstage by the Jellicle Ball’s big finish.
Tugger is one of the first to stand fully upright when Grizabella returns a second time, strutting away from the rest of the group, disdainfully fluffing is coat as he passes her, leaving the stage once again.

These are my dancers in their characters. But it also just makes a good tugoff art. Matt is Tugger and Andrew is Mistoffelees. I think I borrowed one of the oasis misto make up. I wanted his makeup to be very different from the Misto I originally loosely based him off of. 😅
