TrainTober Day 26 - Reflection
Nightmarish Reflection
“Must you always be so bloody loud?” Murdoch snarled.
“Ohh!” Screamed the trucks, as Bear’s engine growled. “It’s a monster!”
That noise - the source of Bear’s name - was something of a sensitive area. He knew his name wasn’t a pejorative title - Henry had given it to him, after all. All the same, he couldn’t help but wonder what things would be like if he didn’t make the noise he did.

“For a busy, bustling yard,” Murdoch said, uncharacteristically cheerfully, “it is rather quiet out here.”
Everyone seemed more at ease. No one jumped at the roar of a diesel’s engine. No one gave him a passing glance. No one shot any glares his way.
He almost didn’t exist. And everyone seemed happier for it.
Even Henry seemed to stroll through the yard more confidently with the Hymeck all but invisible.
His growl, his voice…
Did it really only irritate everyone around him?

“Bear?”
The Hymeck engine jumped, his eyes snapping open.
“Bwhuh?” He blinked. He grimaced.
“What’s wrong, hun?” Henry asked.
Bear looked up at Henry. The green engine always seemed to know when something was wrong. To be fair, Bear had gotten good at sensing when all was not well with Henry as well.
He stared down at the tracks, trying to control his breathing. He hadn’t realised he was panting so hard.
His lip trembled. His eyes watered.
Quietly, he relayed the nightmare to Henry.
“Fuck that.” Henry said, sharply. “I love the sound of your voice.”
Bear stared again.
“I love you the way you are. When we’re taking trains together, and you’re talking to me one-on-one.”
The Hymeck sniffled.
“And I doubt very seriously that anyone else here gets that uptight by just your existence. Murdoch’s just got a stick up his firebars.”
Bear chuckled.
Henry couldn’t help but reciprocate.
“You’ve done so much for this railway. You gave me confidence I never thought I’d have, you helped a ton in getting some of the worst engines here over their diesel prejudices, and you’ve made no small dent in the workload. Even Gordon’s happy to share express trains with you, even if he doesn’t say it.”
The two engines shared a comfortable moment of silence.
“So come on.” Henry said at last. “Let’s go make some noise.”
Idea for don’t be silly billy rewrite: swap out Thomas for Edward
Make it about Billy testing his patience and at some point Edward finally snaps
That seagull is going to kill that pimply orange right at the end of the episode.
