My gift is for @flyingfeatherlights! I decided to go with some Schnitz family shenanigans while making Christmas cookies. Merry Christmas!

but i would be remiss if i didn’t mention all the things that made me fall in love with the show in the first place. please do not hesitate to add onto this, because it is so likely i will forget something.

-“before ever after”! how healthy eugene and rapunzel are in it! “will you be patient with me” “of course”! lady caine’s design! the last gorgeous animation of “wind in my hair”! cassandra’s introduction!

-some of the “filler” episodes in season one actually do what filler episodes should and better establish where the characters are emotionally. “return of strongbow” is a favorite of mine, along with “big brothers of corona”. “one angry princess” is so incredible as a standalone story. “great expotations” stole my heart.

-pre-trauma varian just makes me happy to think about.

-red and angry (later kiera and catalina).

-the recurring theme of eugene bringing rapunzel cupcakes. how cute is that.

-everything about “queen for a day”.

-the chilling imagery of quirin in the amber, and the way the audience— just like varian— has no idea if he’s alive or dead?? hello?? that’s one of the most compelling premises i’ve seen in a long time!

-rapunzel’s tear as the tower falls. rapunzel’s tear as the tower falls. rapunzel’s—

-almost everything about varian’s villain arc.

-the SONGS. “listen up”, while part of a purely-filler episode, is an instant classic. the full version of “wind in my hair”. varian’s song and reprise. “ready as i’ll ever be.” and that’s just season one.

-the way “next stop, anywhere” fills you with hope and wonder at the world.

-the non-caricature designs for characters in season two.

-“happiness is…” as an episode. rapunzel finding some of the lanterns her parents tried to give her. how sadness is a necessary emotion. augh.

-“WAITING IN THE WINGS”

-the brotherhood

-how gripping and horrifying the decay incantation is, and how your breath caught as you watched cassandra’s hand rotting. her putting on the armor she found afterward to symbolize the emotional walls she’s building up.

-the dark kingdom had so much promise, and i adore everyone’s takes on its culture. (a people fiercely guarding an object that could hurt them? possibly with it having been bestowed on them by a deity of the moon??? yes, please!)

-the way season three’s animation gets even more fluid and beautiful.

-everything about varian’s separatist era.

-the season three outfits for eugene and rapunzel are incredible.

-“be very afraid” and all its character moments for varian. lance’s beautiful voice in “bigger than that.”

-how freakin’ chaotic “the lost treasure of herz der sonne” is.

-“NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE”!!

-the way eugene’s coat swishes when he’s fighting the cassandri in “islands apart.”

-new dream finding moments to dance.

-some of the jokes in the show still make me laugh, years later. i love eugene’s dry humor, rapunzel’s optimism and when it turns to rage, varian’s sass, cassandra’s flat observations, and lance’s one-liners.

Angry: And you lectured us for 30 WHOLE MINUTES ABOUT SAFETY

I draw future versions of Varian and the others a lot, so I decided to take the opportunity to draw my designs of older Keira and Catalina again! 😁
