On Monday, India dismissed allegations from the United States that it was dumping rice in the US market, noting that its exports largely consist of premium Basmati rice, which is priced higher than non-Basmati varieties.
Dr Prem Garg, National President of the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, had earlier stated on December 9 that there is no dumping. He emphasised that Indian rice exports to the US are entirely market-driven, based on genuine consumer demand, particularly among ethnic communities that prefer Basmati rice. Basmati’s unique qualities mean US tariffs have not affected export volumes.

India Vows to Safeguard National Interests Amid Trump’s 25% Tariff Move
India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal assured the Lok Sabha on Thursday, following US President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff announcement on Indian goods.
Goyal confirmed that the government is closely studying the implications of the tariff hike and will respond in a manner that protects Indian exporters and key economic sectors.
“On April 2, 2025, the US President issued an executive order on reciprocal tariffs, with a 10% baseline duty effective from April 5, 2025. A total 26% tariff was announced for India, with the country-specific additional tariff initially set for April 9, 2025, later extended to August 1, 2025,” Goyal informed the House.
The minister emphasized that India remains committed to securing the welfare of its farmers, MSMEs, and exporters while continuing dialogue with the US to address trade imbalances.
The announcement follows a period of heightened trade tension between New Delhi and Washington, as the US pushes for reciprocal market access while India seeks to shield its domestic industries.
